Swine flu linked to death of Graton teen

A 14-year-old Graton boy, a student at El Molino High School, became the sixth Sonoma County resident to die after becoming ill with swine flu, the boy's parents said Friday.
County public health officials would not confirm the identity of the boy, Victor Gene Delgado. But the boy's father said he had been told by phone Friday evening that his son had tested positive for Pandemic H1N1 2009, the virus' official name.
In a statement released Friday evening, officials said a boy died earlier this week from complications associated with the flu following a brief hospitalization. The statement said the child had a ?pre-existing medical condition that increased the risk for serious illness from influenza.?
Victor's mother, Yvonne Delgado, said that her son had open heart surgery when he was three days old. But she said that his health ever since had been excellent to the point that his doctor had cleared him to play football last year.
Victor became ill, along with his mother and two of his older sisters, last Thursday. His father, a construction contractor, had had flu like symptoms for about a week prior to that.
Victor and his mother and sisters all went to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Friday evening, his mother said. They were treated in the emergency department, given medications for their conditions and sent home, she said.
?We went home Friday, you know I bought popsicles stuff like that for him,? said Delgado. ?Saturday night we noticed he wasn't breathing, around midnight. He was in my and my husband's bed. We called 911 and the Graton Fire Department came right away they took about thirty minutes to try to get some kind of pulse or heart beat and when they did they got a little one.?
Victor was taken back to Memorial Hospital and was later flown to Children's Hospital in Oakland. He died Tuesday, she said.
There have been six reported deaths in Sonoma County related to H1N1 and there have been 36 hospitalizations and many more reports of influenza like illness in Sonoma County, county officials said.
?Most influenza-like illnesses at this time can be assumed to be H1N1,? the county statement said.
