Swine flu leads to rise in private jet use

AlaskaDenise

In Memoriam
Jet Republic, the private jet company, saw a 20% increase in enquiries during the second quarter of this year, a rise it attrbutes to wealthy individuals trying to avoid ctaching swine flu when travelling on commercial airlines.

Swine flu is spreading rapidly, and the World Health Organisation has said that the focus should be on quick responses to severe outbreaks to minimise impact, rather than on attempting to halt the growth of the virus. In the UK for example, which is Europe's worst-hit territory, there were an estimated 110,000 new cases of swine flu reported during the week ending July 26th, and around 100,000 cases the week before.

Jonathan Breeze, CEO, Jet Republic, said: "Many people still wish to fly but some are worried about travelling on commercial airlines for fear of catching swine flu as they mix with other passengers, some of whom may have the illness. Some airlines are starting to prevent passengers from flying if they suspect they have swine flu but they cannot guarantee that they can spot sufferers. More people who can afford to fly by private jet are considering this as an option so that they don't have to fly with other members of the public, and therefore reduce the chances of catching swine flu."
