Swine flu is affecting mostly young people in the US, according to health officials.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said: "We think very few of the cases we have confirmed are in people over 50."

Meanwhile Mexico has claimed its epidemic is in a "declining phase".

The comments come after the World Health Organisation said the number of people infected around the globe has risen to 787 and the death toll is at 19.

Germany, Spain, Italy and Britain have all confirmed further cases of the virus.

Spain is the hardest-hit nation in Europe with 40 people suffering with swine flu while Ireland, Costa Rica and Colombia have confirmed their first cases.

There have been no further infections in Asia but 350 people continue to be quarantined in a hotel in Hong Kong after a Mexican guest fell ill.

Mexico called the action "unjustified" and advised its citizens to avoid travel to China.

In Canada, officials said some pigs in Alberta have been infected - the first known case of the animals having the virus.

They apparently caught the virus after a farmworker returned from Mexico.

Meanwhile, in Egypt, pig farmers have clashed with police trying to take their animals away for slaughter.

More than 300 people in Cairo threw stones and bottles at officers who fired back with rubber bullets and tear gas.

Egypt is culling the nation's pigs, despite the WHO saying there was no evidence that pigs were passing the virus to humans.

The World Health Organisation and other international groups insist there is no evidence that eating pork products poses an infection risk.

As long as pork is cooked normally there is no problem, the WHO said.

Despite the assurances, 20 countries have put in place full or partial bans on pork imports.

Scientists are still trying to assess how the new virus behaves and compares to regular seasonal flu strains, which kill between 250,000 and 500,000 globally every year.

The outbreak remains tiny compared with other epidemics, such as malaria, hepatitis and meningitis.

But the WHO hiked its pandemic alert level from three to five this week - the last step before a pandemic - due to its rapid spread and the possibility it could hit hard poor and disease-prone communities, including people with HIV.

Re: Swine Flu 'Hitting Mostly Young People' In US

Sometimes, demographic statistics could help to understand the high incidence among people between 5-35 years of age.

There could be obviously an immunological determinant, such as lack of cross-reactive antibodies.

People in school age tends to grouping and so - partially - the higher incidence could be explained.

But I know the target of all these discussion: this is a new - and possibly well worst - 1918 pandemic flu.

This is the mean of all these media pieces we are continuing to gather: we want the evidences, the smoking guns: this is the novel Plague.

The state of mind, sometimes, could derail any sense and rational.
