Swine flu deaths in Cordillera rise to 8

BAGUIO CITY ? The Cordillera office of the Center for Health Development (CHD) has reported that the number of deaths related to the dreaded Influenza A (H1N1) virus in the Cordillera has risen to 8.
Despite the death toll rise, Dr. Myrna Cabotaje, CHD-CAR regional director, said there is a slowdown in the number of individuals being infected by the swine flu virus. However, she warned the public not to be complacent in the coming months.
While Cabotaje refused to divulge further details on the latest A (H1N1)-related deaths in the region, she said that all the eight victims had other illnesses that were reportedly aggravated by the dreaded swine flu virus.
Records show that Cordillera has 522 influenza-like illnesses since May 2009, 259 cases (52 percent) of which have been confirmed through laboratory tests to be cases of Influenza A (H1N1) virus.
Cabotaje said Apayao remains as the only province in the region with no confirmed A (H1N1) case although it has dozens of reported influenza-like illnesses over the past several months.
She disclosed the most number of A (H1N1)-related deaths was reported in July with 7, which included several children and senior citizens.
The health official appealed to the people not to be complacent about the reported slowdown in the number of individuals affected by the virus since the colder months, which is expected to be conducive for the proliferation of the virus, is still ahead, thus, they must keep themselves healthy with the maintenance of their personal hygiene to avoid being infected with the dreaded virus.
Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned the public on the expected occurrence of the second wave of the disease which could be more fatal.
