Dream: Madelynne Butcher wanted to be a doctor

A teenager who dreamed of being a doctor has died after contracting swine flu while on holiday.

Madelynne Butcher was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus after returning from Tenerife, where she had been celebrating the end of her A-levels.

The 18-year-old had shown no symptoms of the illness before she jetted off but was ill when she returned home to Southampton at the end of June.

Miss Butcher was given Tamiflu but her condition deteriorated and she first spent two weeks sedated in hospital before being transferred for specialist care at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital.

Her parents, Beverley and Alan, arrived at the hospital last Thursday to be told she had died.

'She was so adorable, everyone who met her thought so and that's what all her friends have been saying,' Mrs Butcher said today.

The cause of death has yet to be determined

A TALENTED student who dreamed of becoming a doctor has died after catching swine flu on holiday.

Fitness fan Madelynne Butcher, 18, felt sick and breathless when she returned from Tenerife, where she celebrated finishing her A Levels with pals.

The teen spent three weeks in hospital but died shortly before her parents Beverley and Alan arrived for their regular visit last Thursday.

Heartbroken Beverley, of Southampton, said: "Madelynne always wanted to go into medicine or research. She was so adorable, outgoing, easy-going and thoughtful."

Maddy - who was set to study biology at the University of East Anglia - was first taken to Southampton General Hospital. She was given Tamiflu and medics had to sedate her.

But her condition deteriorated and after two weeks she was moved to a specialist unit at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital. She died a week later.
Tribute

Maddy held down three jobs - including one working with disabled kids - to save for university and loved swimming and going to the gym.

Her brother Robin, 22, said: "She worked hard and played hard. She was a great friend to everyone, especially to me."

By last night a tribute group on social networking site Facebook had been swamped with messages from grieving friends. Helen Frankham wrote: "Maddy, we will all miss you but you will never, ever be forgotten."

And Blake Hopley said: "Rest in peace Maddy, you are one of my closest friends. Your party spirit will live on! xx."

Swine flu has now killed 36 people in England. A post mortem has yet to confirm the exact cause of Maddy's death.

NINETEEN British teenagers were in isolation in Monaco last night following a swine flu outbreak at their language school in nearby Cap d'Ail, France.

Meanwhile, schoolgirl Natasha Newman, 16, of Highgate, North London, was said to be improving after four weeks fighting for life in a Greek hospital.

Friends raising cash for Sholing ‘dancing queen’s’ headstone

“SHE was a dancing queen who would have loved to be here with us to join in the party.”

Those are the words that friends of Hampshire’s first victim of swine flu used to describe their much missed pal.

Now they are joining together for a fundraiser in memory of talented teenager Maddy Butcher, of Sholing, who died in August.

Maddy’s four close friends Chloe Adams, 19, Emily Asbury, 19, Beth Ruddock, 18 and Anneliese Smith, 18, have organised an event in her memory on Sunday to raise money to buy a headstone for the 18-year-old’s grave.

Chloe, a social and political studies student at Southampton City College, said: “She was just the life and soul of the party and everyone’s friend.

Nobody had a bad word to say about her. We all miss her terribly.”

The fundraising event at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton will feature a variety of performers including Amy Peters who sang at Maddy’s funeral.

There will also be a DJ and a raffle with prizes including massages and meals at restaurants.

The teenagers want to drum up the funds to get a headstone for Maddy’s grave.

Chloe, of Paget Street, Southampton, said: “We thought the best way to raise money for the headstone would be to have a party in her honour.

We couldn’t think of a better way. She would have loved it. She was such a dancing queen.”

Maddy, who was a former St Anne’s and St Monica’s schoolgirl and dreamed of being a doctor, died just weeks before she was due to collect her A Level results from Itchen College.

The teenager was on holiday in Tenerife with Emily when it is thought she caught the virus and passed away on August 6 after a month-long battle.

Maddy did shift work at Vodka Revolutions in Bedford Place, was a play worker looking after disabled children for the Rose Road Association in Southampton and put in hours as a supervisor in Sainsbury’s in Bitterne to save up money for university.

Tickets for the event, which will take place from 5pm until 10pm, cost £5.
