SWINE flu victim Paul Brindley was an active, healthy father who was the "backbone" of his young family.
The Hove businessman, 37, died early on Tuesday morning in the Flinders Medical Centre despite suffering from no underlying health problems.
Wife Melinda was by his side in the intensive care unit when he lost his battle with the virus.
He is also survived by a son, 11, and a daughter, 8.
Mr Brindley's father, Alan, yesterday said the family was shocked by the rapid spread of the disease and was still struggling to come to terms with the death.
"In his short life, Paul achieved so much across the fields of business, his sports and family life," Mr Brindley said.
"He loved sport and the outdoor life and will be greatly missed. But we are also blessed to have been given the 37 years with Paul and will remember him fondly."
Mr Brindley was a committed sportsman and played twice a week for the Somerton Baptist Basketball Club in Adelaide's southern suburbs.
Team-mates have paid tribute to his dogged fighting spirit and will wear black armbands this weekend in his honour. Mr Brindley was also South Australian owner and director of commercial furniture business UCI which he helped build into a successful enterprise.
Industry colleagues also paid tribute yesterday, describing his death as a "devastating loss".
"Paul was highly respected by his staff and peers and was an integral part of the success of UCI, not only in SA, but also nationally," one said.
"Paul will be remembered for his passion, his intensity.
"He will be sadly missed by colleagues, friends and of course his loving family."
Fellow members of the Holdfast Bay Baptist Church have also remembered his "strong faith" and commitment to family values.
