Swine flu 'contributory cause' in teacher's death

Swine flu was a "contributory cause" in the case of a teacher who died earlier this week.

Abdullah Patel, who was in his 40s and from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, is understood to have been a teacher at the Institute of Islamic Education - an independent boarding school next to the main mosque in the Savile Town area.

Mr Patel also had serious underlying health issues.

The school was closed last week because of a number of cases of swine flu, health officials said.

NHS Kirklees said tests proved that the virus contributed to his death. But tests are continuing to try to work out whether swine flu played a part in the death of a nine-year-old girl from the same town.

Dr Judith Hooper, director of public health for NHS Kirklees, said: "Following the death of a man from Dewsbury, tests have shown that a contributory cause of death was swine flu (H1N1). The individual also had serious underlying health issues. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this time."

No links have been found between Mr Patel and nine-year-old Asmaa Hussain, who died in the town last week. She also had underlying health problems and her family confirmed she died following an epileptic fit.

Their deaths brought the UK total of people who have died after contracting swine flu to seven.

Over the weekend another nine-year-old girl, from south London, died after contracting the illness. The young London victim also had a history of ill-health.

She was the second person in the capital to die after a 19-year-old man, also from south London and with serious underlying health problems, died last week.

Jacqui Fleming, 38, of Glasgow, was the first to die after contracting the virus last month, two weeks after her son Jack was born 11 weeks prematurely. Jack died later but had not contracted the virus.

The second victim was a 73-year-old man from the Inverclyde area of Scotland.

The youngest UK victim was six-year-old Sameerah Ahmad.

Sameerah, who was born with a rare life-threatening disease, died at Birmingham's Children's Hospital after contracting swine flu, although it is unclear if it contributed to her death.

Last week, there were warnings that the number of cases of swine flu could soar to 100,000 a day by the end of next month.
