CHESAPEAKE ? When Angela Mefford started coughing, she and her husband, Hank Mefford, Sr., didn?t think much of it.
?I?ve seen her fight off some colds,? says Mefford, ?and she just couldn?t shake this one.?
A trip to the hospital three days later, doctors would find she had a form of Influenza. Her chest X-rays clear, they sent her home to rest, but the 27-year-old seemed to get worse. She returned to the hospital two days after the initial visit. Her lungs were filled. Angela had pneumonia. She was admitted to the hospital for what turned out to be complications from Swine Flu.
?Last thing I said to her was: ?All right, baby, you?re in good hands. I love you. I?ll see you tomorrow,?? Mefford recalls, beginning to cry. ?She looked right back at me, said, ?I love you, too, baby. I?ll see you tomorrow.??
Mefford did see his wife that next day. By then, she had a breathing tube down her throat in an attempt to get her oxygen levels up. A doctor told Mefford Angela had a 50/50 chance of survival. Within hours, she was dead.
?That?s what is really the hardest part,? Mefford tells 13News, ?is the timeframe of when she got diagnosed with this and the time she died. It?s just too quick. You don?t really have a chance to do anything.?
Nancy Welch, MD, MPH, Director of the Chesapeake Health District, explains Angela Mefford did have an underlying condition that put her at greater risk than people in other groups for developing complications from H1N1. Welch describes the speed with which everything seemed to move as ?rapid.?
?She changed my life. She really did,? says Mefford of his wife. ?When I met her, I was the worst you you?d want living by you. I mean, I come in with my loud music, traveling fast, my beer drinking, raising Cain, and she? calmed me down quite a bit, and I?m glad of it.?
For Mefford, the greatest thing to come of their time together is seven-month-old Hank, Jr., who along with dad, are staying with Mefford?s parents.
?He knows something?s happening, but he just don?t know what,? Mefford says. ?He feels it, and he just don?t understand why. He keeps looking around for mom, but he?ll never see her.?
Angela Mefford also is survived by an eight-year-old daughter from another relationship.
