The victim -- Shabana Shaikh -- had been put on ventilator since her admission to the government-run Sassoon Hospital on August 22, hospital sources said.

Meanwhile, attendance at schools and colleges, which reopened on August 24 after a gap of a fortnight, remained affected by the swine flu scare among parents and students.

The district administration has issued an appeal to people to get on with their activities without frequenting crowded places even as Ganesh festival enthusiasts in some parts thronged pandals to have glimpses of tableaux depicting scenes that underlined vigilance to curb spread of the deadly virus.

Pune/Mumbai, Aug 26 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man died due to swine flu, raising the nationwide toll to 79 even as authorities in worst-hit Pune have issued a fresh appeal to the people to get on with their daily activities without frequenting crowded places.

Flu fatalities rose to 25 in Pune where Shabana Sheikh, who was on a ventilator since her admission to government-run Sassoon Hospital on August 22, died today, hospital sources said.

Attendance in Pune schools and colleges, which reopened on Monday after a fortnight's gap, remained low as a result of the pandemic, officials said.

The district administration appealed to the people to carry on with their daily chores without frequenting crowded places. Many Ganesh festival pandals displayed tableaux highlighting the do's and don'ts about the viral disease

'Early testing could have saved Shabana'

The deceased used to live in the Kasewadi slum with her parents and two children. She was working as a sweeper in a city college. On August 19, she was on the college terrace, when she started to feel uneasy and collapsed. Shabana consulted a private medical practitioner first and later went to the Sonawane hospital run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). However, her condition did not improve here. After noticing her symptoms, the hospital authorities immediately referred her to the Sassoon general hospital, where her swab samples were taken. The test report came on Tuesday, confirming her H1N1-positive status.

"The general practitioner we consulted first told us she was feeling uneasy because of her heart problem and gave her some medicines. But her condition deteriorated further. On Wednesday, we took her to the Sonawane hospital and, on Friday, to the Sassoon hospital, where they said she might be suffering from the H1N1 flu. By then she had slipped into a coma," said the Shabana's mother Salina Sheikh.

Shabana's father, Inayatulla Sheikh, said, "Till Friday, we did not have any idea that she might be suffering from the H1N1 flu. Apart from breathlessness, she was also running a mild fever since Friday. It was only after we took her to the Sassoon that they took her swab samples. She was kept on a ventilator after that. She could have been saved had she been tested for H1N1 on Wednesday itself."

Meanwhile, Shabana's two children, whose swabs were taken as well, tested negative for H1N1 flu.

Avinash Bagve, corporator of the Kasewadi area, said, "Though the PMC has given clear guidelines to all general practitioners to send any person showing swine-flu symptoms to the authorised hospitals, there was some delay in Shabana's case."

Anil Bhandwalkar, president, General Practitioners' Association, said, "It becomes difficult for us to treat and refer such people, since they keep changing doctors, and do not even give their medical history when they go to a new doctor. We have been given clear guidelines by the PMC regarding swine flu, which we are following."
