Swine Flu Case Outcome Surprises WJU Officials

Posted: 5:44 pm EDT September 21, 2009

WHEELING, W.Va. -- One swine flu case at Wheeling Jesuit University was quickly handled, treated, and cured. University officials said the potential for a swine flu outbreak was there, but quick action kept it under control.

"I've gotten requests to identify this person. This person is back on campus, this person is not contagious. This person would not be on campus if they were contagious," said Dr. Christine Ohl-Gigliotti, Dean of Student Development.

Ohl-Gigliotti said the person was immediately isolated and allowed ample time to recover. But she admits she's surprised by the outcome of the case.

"We've not had any new cases since that time, and to be honest that kind of surprised me because of what we hear with this particular flu strain is that once it's out there it spreads quite quickly," she said.

Ohl-Gigliotti said she knows the status could change at any minute. It's the same philosophy at West Liberty University. Campus officials said their critical incident response team is meeting regularly and discussing flu prevention strategies.

At WJU, they're keeping an eye out for future cases.

"As of right now, we're not concerned about it. We're always planning ahead, so that that doesn't happen. If that does happen, we know how to respond accordingly. I've also learned that anything can happen at any time," she said.
