On June 22, classical swine fever was detected on a farm in Dagda Region (southeastern Latvia), reports LETA/Nozare.lv.

The Food and Veterinary Service representative Anna Joffe informed the business portal Nozare.lv that three cases of swine fever in wild boars had been registered in the region so far this year. Wild boars in this region have been regularly vaccinated against swine fever since 2013...

Latvia may declare state of emergency to cope with African swine fever
RIGA, July 1 Tue Jul 1, 2014 1:21pm EDT

(Reuters) - Latvia may declare a state of emergency in the eastern part of the country, near its border with Belarus and Russia to fight, an outbreak of African swine fever in some wild boars and domestic pigs.

Swine fever was discovered in Latvia at the end of June and earlier in both Lithuania and Poland. The disease occurs among pigs and wild boars, where its effects are devastating and often deadly, and there is no vaccine. It does not affect humans.

So far, a total of eight wild boars and three domestic pigs in Latvia have tested positive...

The Latvian government today declared a state of emergency in all border areas with Russia and Estonia following an outbreak of African swine fever.

The government supported the proposal from the Agriculture Ministry to declare a state of emergency in areas including
Rezekne, Ludza, Aloja, Mazsalaca, Rujiena, Naukseni, Valka, Burtnieki, Koceni, Beverina, Strenci, Priekuli, Rauna, Smiltene, Ape, Aluksne, Vilaka, Balvi, Rugaji, Baltinava, Preili and Riebini regions...
