Very low levels of radioactivity has reached Sweden
Posted at 2011-03-23. 17:05
Emissions from power plants in Japan have now reached Sweden. The concentrations measured are very low and involves no risks to humans and the environment. It shows the first measurements of FOI on behalf of the Radiation Safety.
Following the nuclear accident in Japan has called on Radiation Protection Defence Research Agency (FOI), to continuously measure the radioactivity in the air with their stations.
Yesterday, Radiation Safety, the first preliminary test results from Kista in Stockholm. Now it has expanded the preliminary results from its other stations. At three locations, Stockholm, Ume? and Kiruna, has recorded very low levels of iodine -131, at other stations have so far not recorded any amounts of iodine-131.
Highest concentrations were measured in Stockholm, about 0.3 milli Becquerel per cubic meter of air. The radiation is completely negligible. It is much lower than the natural background radiation that we are always exposed to, for example, from the bedrock in Sweden.
- Just as we expected, we have measured radioactive iodine from
nuclear accident in Japan. The concentrations are very low and does not imply any risk to humans and the environment, "says Leif Moberg, head of research at the Radiation Safety.
FOI operates stations in six locations in Sweden on behalf of the Radiation Safety: in Stockholm, G?vle, Ume?, Visby, Kiruna and Ljungbyhed.
Radiation Safety will continuously publish test results on its website.
