Flu season is here
This year's flu season is under way in Europe and has even begun here in Sweden.
Since the end of November, several patients suffering from influenza A (H1N1) 2009.
The majority of new cases reported in Sweden concerning persons who were not vaccinated last year.
The UK has already had several serious cases and several deaths by the A (H1N1) 2009.
There you can see is that the flu hits hardest the same teams as last year.
Thus, in otherwise healthy people who are younger than 65 years and pregnant women and people with underlying illnesses.
It is therefore important that health care on the persons recommended seasonal influenza vaccination to really get vaccinated to prevent serious influenza disease.
It is also important that health care attention and are considering treatment with antiviral medicines for people with underlying diseases that exhibit flu symptoms, but also for otherwise healthy people who have severe flu symptoms.
Read more about the Board's recommendations that apply to the normal seasonal influenza, including pandemic influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 here .
Careful hand hygiene
A good way to reduce the risk of becoming infected with the flu or other contagious diseases is to be careful with hand hygiene.
This year's seasonal flu vaccine protects against the three types of influenza that is expected to have the largest distribution, where influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 is one of them.
Influenza viruses are constantly changing and therefore adapted flu vaccines annually to provide protection against the three types of influenza that is expected to have the largest spread in the season.
It is the WHO for determining which flu strains to include. This year's influenza vaccine contains:
? A/California/7/2009 influenza (H1N1)-like virus
? A/Perth/16/2009 influenza (H3N2)-like virus
? Influenza viruses B/Brisbane/60/2008-likt
The vaccine does not contain adjuvant and also no preservatives.
Pandemrix vaccine protects against influenza A (H1N1) 2009. Those who were vaccinated last season still has good protection.
Smittskyddsinstitutet characterize virus
During last year established the most microbiology laboratories molecular diagnostics for influenza and for the specific detection of A (H1N1). Several samples containing influenza has been sent to the Infectious Diseases Institute for further characterization.
Karakt?riseringsdata, both globally and from Sweden shows that the A (H1N1) strains similar to vaccine strain (A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)). While seasonal influenza A (H3N2) vaccine strain is similar (A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)) and the majority of influenza B strains similar to vaccine strain (B/Brisbane/60/2008).
All influenza strains have been characterized in Sweden are sensitive to the antiviral drugs.
