Sweden confirms 14 swine flu deaths

Three women and eleven men have died from the swine flu in Sweden since August, according to the country?s disease control authorities.

?We?re expecting more deaths, but hopefully fewer than we excepted at the beginning,? said SMI epidemiologist Andreas Heddini to the TT news agency, who added that the agency had expected more swine flu fatalities than have been reported thus far.

Among those who have died from the swine flu are a 3-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy, both of whom were members of a known risk group.

Most of Sweden?s swine flu victims have been above 50-years-old and the majority also belonged to a known risk group.

Three of eleven males who have died didn?t belong to a group known to have a higher risk for contracting the disease.

Sweden?s first confirmed death from the A/H1N1 virus, a 37-year-old man from Uppsala, was recorded the week of August 24th.

Eleven of Sweden?s fourteen swine flu fatalities have occurred in the last month, with the latest confirmed death, a 21-year-old woman from ?sterg?tland in southeastern Sweden, coming during the week of November 16th.

While the 3-year-old was the youngest victim, Sweden?s oldest swine flu victim so far was a 71-year-old woman from V?sternorrland in northern Sweden.

The deaths also have a wide geographic distribution, from V?sternorrland in the north to Sk?ne in the south. The county with the most confirmed swine flu deaths is Stockholm, with three, followed by Uppsala, ?rebro, and V?sternorrland counties, each of which have had two fatalities attributed to the swine flu.

15 svenskar döda i svininfluensan

Tre kvinnor och elva män har hittills dött i den så kallade svininfluensan, enligt Smittskyddsinstitutet, som nu publicerat en lista över de avlidna.
Bland de avlidna finns en treårig och en sextonårig pojke. Båda tillhörde en riskgrupp.

Ytterligare ett treårigt barn har dött i svininfluensan, utöver de dödsfall som Smittskyddsinstitutet har sammanställt. Pojken dog i lördags en kort tid efter det att han hade kommit till Astrid Lindgrens barnsjukhus i Solna.

- Han tillhörde en av riskgrupperna och hade en allvarlig bakomliggande sjukdom, säger Klas Östman, presschef vid Karolinska universitetssjukhuset.

Exakt vad som utlöste pojkens död, influensan eller grundtillståndet, är inte klart och kommer heller inte att utredas. Dödsfallet rapporteras som influensarelaterat eftersom pojken testades positivt för A/H1N1 och hade influensasymtom.

Flesta över 50 år
De flesta av de avlidna var över 50 år och majoriteten av dem tillhörde också någon riskgrupp. Tre av de elva personerna tillhörde inte någon riskgrupp.
Enligt Andreas Heddini, biträdande statsepidemiolog på Smittskyddsinstitutet, är siffrorna på antalet avlidna hittills "ganska förväntade".

- Hittills har det varit övervikt av folk med riskfaktorer och medelålders män jämfört med hur influensan har slagit internationellt. Det kan spela in att de har varit ensamboende och haft svårt att kontakta sjukvården när de blivit sämre, säger Heddini till TT.

Fler väntas dö
Framöver väntas influensan drabba fler som inte tillhör riskgrupperna samt även yngre personer.

- Vi förväntar oss fler dödsfall, men förhoppningsvis inte så många som vi trodde från början. Så här långt har vi haft färre dödsfall än väntat men det är svårt att sia om, säger Heddini.

Sverige är ett av tre länder i Europa som rapporterat snabbast smittspridning av influensan under den senaste veckan. De andra två är Norge och Italien.

Fördubblad ökning
Antalet nya fall av den nya influensan i Europa har fördubblats varannan vecka sedan mitten av oktober, enligt den europeiska smittskyddsmyndigheten ECDC. Kurvan för influensan pekar alltså brant uppåt.

Smittspridningen är hög i Bulgarien, Danmark, Tyskland, Island, Irland, Litauen, Polen och Portugal. I resten av Europa är spridningen "medelhög", enligt ECDC.
169 personer har dött av viruset i Europa under den senaste veckan, enligt ECDC. Sedan i april har 670 personer avlidit av den nya influensan i Europa.

An additional three-year-old child has died from flu, in addition to the deaths of Infectious Diseases Institute has compiled. The boy died Saturday shortly after he had arrived at the Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital in Solna.

- He belonged to a riskgroup and had a serious underlying disease, "says Klas Östman, press officer at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Exactly what triggered the boy's death, flu, or ground state, is not clear and will not be investigated. Death is reported that influenza-related because the boy tested positive for A/H1N1 and had flu symptoms.

Most over 50 years
Most of those who died were over 50 years and the majority of them belonged also a risk. Three of the eleven persons belonged to no risk.
According to Andreas Heddini, assistant state epidemiologist in the Infectious Diseases Institute, the figures on the number of deaths so far "very likely".
- Now, the preponderance of people with risk factors and middle-aged men compared with the flu have been proposed internationally. It can record that they have been living alone and found it difficult to contact health care when they become worse, "says Heddini to TT.

More are expected to die
In the future expected flu affect more non-risk groups as well as younger people.

- We expect more deaths, but hopefully not as many as we thought from the beginning. So far we have had fewer deaths than expected but it is difficult to predict, says Heddini.

Sweden is one of three countries in Europe reported the fastest spread of flu in the past week. The other two are Norway and Italy.

Doubled up
The number of new cases of novel influenza in Europe has doubled every two weeks since mid-October, according to the European bio authority ECDC. The curve of influenza thus pointing steeply upwards.

The spread of infection is high in Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland and Portugal. In the rest of Europe, the spread is "medium", according to ECDC.

169 people have died of the virus in Europe during the past week, according to ECDC. Then in April, 670 people died of the new flu in Europe.
