Minister confirms rabies outbreak

THE circulating news about rabies outbreak in Mbabane is true, the Minister of Agriculture Clement Dlamini has confirmed.
A fortnight ago this newspaper reported that there was a dog in Fonteyn that was suspected to be carrying the deadly disease. As a result, the dog had its head cut and taken to the laboratory for diagnosis.
The severed head tested positive. Four cases of rabies have been diagnosed so far.

Dlamini confirmed that there are two cases of rabid dogs that have been found positive in Mbabane.
On the other hand, another dog at Siphocosini has been diagnosed with rabies.
The minister said there was also a case in Mayiwane after a pig was bitten by dogs. The pig contracted rabies after the bite.

MBABANE ? While rabies is commonly assocatied with dogs, the recent outbreak in the capital city has also seen other animals affected.

The Swaziland Animal Welfare Society in conjunction with the government Veterinary department and the Mbabane City Council are warning the public to be on alert as there is an outbreak of rabies in Mbabane and surrounding areas.

It is reported that over the last 10 days, a number of animals including three dogs, one cat a pig, and a cow have all tested positive for this deadly virus that has no cure yet.

So far, the affected areas - which stretch as far as Pigg?s Peak are Pine Valley, Fonteyn, Dalraich, Mayiwane, and Mdzangwini.

As a result the Veterinary department and Mbabane City Council will embark on an emergency mass vaccination of all domestic dogs and cats...
