New research into bird flu virus spread
ROTTERDAM - The Netherlands Institute of Ecology and the Erasmus MC in a new way to the spread of viruses by migrating birds investigations. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has announced on Monday.
Sixteen small wild swans (Bewick's Swan ; Cygnus bewickii, ed) are infected with a flu virus. It is a harmless ( "low pathogenic") flu virus that naturally occurs in wild birds and poultry that also caused no problems. The infected swans and 32 non-infected swans have a collar transmitter that allows their flight to follow.
According to the researchers, the little swans are affected by the infection. In a laboratory wild birds and chickens are not sick of the chosen flu virus, as is already known. This happens in the wild, otherwise, such as the migration much effort. "But more than a light flu will it not be" expected researcher Ron Fouchier.
During the coming winter and the following are the swans regularly searched for behavioral observations and for the remote readout of the GPS stations.
The researchers are supported by a network of birdwatchers. The transmitters operate for a year and a half.
