Crawley schoolgirl death could be due to swine flu

A YOUNG primary school pupil has died ? and swine flu could have been the cause.

The young girl, who was in year five at Three Bridges Junior School, passed away on Sunday (October 18) at East Surrey Hospital.

A letter has been released by the school to parents saying swine flu (influenza type A H1N1) could be a "possible contributory factor".

The letter reads: "I am sorry to let you know about the death of a pupil in year five of the junior school on Sunday October 18.

"The cause of the child's death is not yet known. However, influenza type A H1N1 (Swine flu) may be a possible contributory factor. "Results of tests will be available later this week."

Judith Wright, director of public health and wellbeing for NHS West Sussex, said: "We are aware of the tragic death of a child in Crawley. "However, until results of the post mortem and associated tests are available we will not fully understand the cause of this child's death, and we are unable to comment any further at this time.

"We are working closely with the child's family, and the school involved, to support them and we would urge people to respect their privacy during this difficult time."

We heard about this death days ago, the girls younger brothers are both in hospital on Tamiflu. Don't understand the long delay in reporting this!!

Crawley schoolgirl whose death has been linked to swine flu is named

A SCHOOLGIRL whose death may have been caused by swine flu has been named.

Brittany Eastland, who attended Three Bridges Junior School, died on Sunday October 18.

Tests for the cause of her death are ongoing but it is believed swine flu could have been a contributory factor.

Claire Tiley, headteacher of the school, in Gales Drive, paid a touching tribute to the girl.

She said: "She was a gentle-natured, lovely girl, a model pupil.

"She had a great relationship with all the adults at school and we will all miss her smile and friendly face.

"She will be sadly missed by the whole school community."

Brittany is being mourned by her mother Sharon and brothers Elliot and Luke.

It is believed her father is no longer alive.

A letter was released to parents and published online by the school last week, saying swine flu (influenza type A H1N1) could be a factor in the death.

The letter reads: "I am sorry to let you know about the death of a pupil, in Year 5 of the junior school, on Sunday October 18.

Doctors confirm swine flu killed Crawley girl

A HEALTH trust has confirmed swine flu caused the death of a "beautiful" town schoolgirl.

Nine-year-old Brittany Eastland, from Three Bridges, died on October 18.

A spokeswoman for NHS West Sussex said: "We can confirm results have shown that Brittany Eastland died from pneumonia as a result of H1N1 Influenza.

"Our thoughts are with Brittany's family and friends, especially her mother and brothers."

Grieving mother Sharon Boor: "My beautiful Brittany-Rose was such a happy, kind and caring little girl who thought nothing of putting others before herself.

"She was greatly loved by everyone who knew her and she will be so missed, especially by myself, her two younger brothers and all her school friends.

"She was the shining light in our life and now that light has gone."

Claire Tiley, headteacher of Brittany's school, said: "She was a gentle-natured, lovely girl, a model pupil at Three Bridges Junior School.

"She was trusted and respected by her peers and was caring and considerate to the children in her class and those she worked with.

NHS West Sussex said the case should serve as a reminder of the dangers of swine flu.

The trusts spokeswoman added: "Brittany's death is clear evidence of how serious swine flu can be and why we should not be complacent.

"Although the majority of people in Sussex have only experienced mild symptoms from swine flu, it can have a much more serious and tragic effect and claim lives.

"We would urge everyone to make sure they know what the symptoms of swine flu are and what to do if we, or a member of our family, become unwell.

"The main symptoms of swine flu are fever, tiredness, lack of appetite, coughing, sore throat, pain in muscles and joints, headache and chills and in some cases vomiting and diarrhoea."

Anyone suffering from these symptoms should stay at home and call 0800 1513100 or visit www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu.

People with serious underlying illnesses, pregnant woman, children under one or people whose condition suddenly gets much worse should see a doctor immediately.

A nine-year-old girl with no underlying health conditions died from pneumonia caused by swine flu, tests have revealed.

Brittany Eastland, from Three Bridges in West Sussex, died on 18 October at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

Health chiefs in West Sussex have now confirmed that the schoolgirl's death was linked to the H1N1 flu virus.

Her mother Sharon Boor said Brittany had been fit and healthy and urged people to take up the swine flu jab.

She said: "Brittany didn't have any underlying conditions and wasn't in an at risk group for swine flu.

"People can't be complacent. Don't think being fit and healthy will protect you. My daughter was fit and healthy too."

She added: "Everyone should accept the swine flu vaccine if you are offered it. It doesn't just protect you, it protects your loved ones around you."

She said her daughter was a happy, kind and caring little girl who was greatly loved.

She said: "She was the shining light in our life and now that light has gone."

'Vaccinate children'

Peter Hayward, NHS West Sussex flu director, urged everyone to make sure they could recognise the symptoms of swine flu.

These include fever, tiredness, lack of appetite, coughing, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, headache and chills, and in some cases vomiting and diarrhoea.

People should contact their doctor in cases where a child had a serious underlying illness, or are aged under one, or had a worsening condition.

Mr Hayward added: "Hundreds of people in the priority groups have already been vaccinated, and soon we will start to vaccinate children under five years old.

"We would encourage everyone who is offered the vaccination to make sure you have it. It is the best line of defence."

Sharon Boor warned other parents not to be complacent following the death of her daughter Brittany Eastland, who was not in an at-risk group for swine flu, and urged them to accept the swine flu vaccine if it is offered.

Brittany, a Year 5 pupil at Three Bridges Junior School in Crawley, West Sussex, died in October at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, Surrey.

Tests were carried out and it was confirmed that the ''fit and healthy'' youngster died from pneumonia as a result of H1N1 influenza, a spokesman for NHS West Sussex said today.

Miss Boor said in a statement: ''Brittany didn't have any underlying conditions and wasn't in an at-risk group for swine flu, so people can't be complacent.

''Don't think being fit and healthy will protect you. My daughter was fit and healthy too.

''Everyone should accept the swine flu vaccine if you are offered it. It doesn't just protect you, it protects your loved ones around you.

''Everyone should have it, especially for their children. The vaccine may give you a sore arm or other minor side-effects but it is nothing compared to the alternative and what I am going through now.''

NHS West Sussex said Brittany's death was clear evidence of how serious swine flu can be.

Its flu director, Peter Hayward, echoed Ms Boor's message for people not to be complacent.

He said: ''Although the majority of people in Sussex have only experienced mild symptoms from swine flu, it can have a much more serious and tragic effect and claim lives.''

He went on: ''We are also working hard to offer the swine flu vaccine to everyone at risk of developing serious complications. Hundreds of people in the priority groups have already been vaccinated, and soon we will start to vaccinate children under five years old.''
