APA ? Lusaka (Zambia) A suspected outbreak of the so-called African Swine Flu (ASF) in the southern province of Zambia has killed over 200 pigs and threatens more animals, veterinary officials have said.

According to a report by {The Zambia Daily Mail } on Monday, the outbreak had begun in January, a month after the government banned the sale of pigs and related products in the province to stop it from spreading to the rest of the country.

The provincial veterinary officer for the area Charles Maseka said since last month, the pigs have been dying daily.

“Already a total of 213 pigs have been killed by this suspected ASF. I have contacted both the provincial and district veterinary officers to examine the root cause of the deaths” Maseka said.

Following the outbreak, pigs suspected to be carrying the disease in other province have been slaughtered with samples of the dead pigs collected by veterinarians and taken to Lusaka for assessment to determine the cause of death.

The latest report about the ASF outbreak comes two weeks after the government lifted a ban on the transportation of pigs and pork products in the south of the country.

The ASF is caused by the African swine fever virus which has a high mortality rate among pigs.

This outbreak isn't influenza. African Swine Fever (ASF) is not the same thing as swine flu. The reporter is confused.
