Surveillance of MRSA in the Netherlands in 2009, the number of livestock-associated MRSA stabilizes

This report is the summary of the results of the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) surveillance in the Netherlands in 2009. The medical microbiology laboratories submitted 2969 unique MRSA isolates to the RIVM/CIb for spa-typing. This is an increase of 10% over last year.

The number of livestock-associated MRSA isolates with spa types belonging to the livestock-associated clonal complex (CC) 398 remained with 42% (n =1245) equal to the percentage in 2008.

From 73% (n =2126) of the strains a questionnaire was received. Eight percent of the MRSA carriers originated from a foreign hospital, this percentage remained constant over the preceding years.

One PVL-positive isolate with the livestock-associated spa-type t034 was found. It was from a Chinese adoptee.
