The number of COVID-19 cases in Suriname has risen by eighteen since yesterday.

From tomorrow, a total lockdown applies at 6 p.m. in Suriname. This lockdown lasts until Friday June 12 at 6 a.m. This means that everyone has to stay at home. Cars may have a maximum of two occupants and taxis may carry a maximum of two passengers, Vice President Ashwin Adhin said this afternoon.

Suriname is in the middle of the local spread phase. Like all other countries, the country follows the so-called contamination curve. That means, according to Adhin, that even more people will become infected in the coming days.

Number of COVID-19 cases increased to 90
June 5, 2020 at 9:09 pm

The number of people infected with the COVID-19 virus was adjusted from 89 to 90 during the COVID-19 press conference. The number of active cases has now been set at 80. Cleopatra Jessurun, Director of Public Health, said that a total of 1,175 tests were carried out by various laboratories.

She also immediately said that there is no manipulation of the figures and that testing has continued both before and after the elections. Jessurun explained that the management team has adjusted its strategy. Indeed, there is a scarcity of personnel and consumables. She further indicated that 75 percent of COVID-19 cases are not in need of care. This means that they have been tested positive, but have no complaints. As a result, they do not immediately need medical care. These persons are placed in isolation. Those in need, 25 percent of the cases, are in the Wanica Regional Hospital. Seven percent of this number is included in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Of the number of people currently in the ICU, one person is unstable. The rest is fairly stable, Jessurun explained. She also indicated that there are many reports on the 178 line. The number increased further from 28 May. On June 2, 2,500 telephone calls were received. She noted the response to the management team's call to use the 178 line only for the serious cause the country is in. The prank phone calls have partially decreased.
Jessurun took the opportunity to thank the frontline personnel for their commitment. This concerns the nurses, the doctors, the drivers who collect COVID-19 patients, specialists and others.

130 COVID-19 cases now
June 9, 2020 at 2:12 pm

The COVID-19 counter was updated from 128 to 130 cases last night. Those are two cases. The number of active cases is now 119. Yesterday, society was startled with a second person who died of the virus. It concerns a female person who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Wanica Regional Hospital.

This COVID-19 positive patient has been in a very worrisome situation since her admission. The patient was treated on the ventilator. An attempt has been made to keep her alive with all available means and medication.

Currently 230 people are in quarantine. On April 3, the first person in Suriname died of COVID-19.

There are now cluster infections, which means that an infected person can infect several people in his or her immediate environment. That is why the number of COVID-19 infected persons is increasing rapidly. At the same time, positive testing of a person immediately involves contact tracing, whereby everyone with whom this person has been in contact is identified and immediately tested.

In order to identify and remove as many infected persons as possible from society, a tight and strict total lockdown has recently taken effect for two weeks. Society is asked to cooperate in order to reduce the risk of multiple infections.

Suriname eased Covid-19 measures, despite new daily cases
Posted on Monday, June 22, 2020
Presbouterse 2 640x360

The measures related to the corona approach aim to keep the virus under maximum control, to put no more burden on medical care than it can handle and to protect vulnerable people in society.

According to epidemiologists and virologists, there is currently no prospect of a midline against the Covid-19 virus.
The best way is then to try to contain the contamination.

For containment there are measures which are more or less imposed by governments everywhere in the world.

It concerns the following rules:

- Wash hands more often.
-Coughing sneezing in the elbow.
-Use paper tissues to blow the nose and then throw it away.
-Do not shake hands.
-Keep 1.5 meters away from others.
(This applies to everyone: on the street, in shops or other buildings and at work).
-Working from home as much as possible
-Travel as much as possible on foot or with your own transport.
-Use public transport only if there is no other option.
The use of a face mask is mandatory for everyone.

Obtaining and maintaining control over the coronavirus can only succeed if the basic rules apply to everyone and are of course also observed.
Relax the measures

Transition to relaxation of the measures is only possible if the coronavirus remains under control.

Suriname is moving to easing restrictions despite the daily new cases of Covid-19. Suriname currently has 314 infections, including 200 active cases, 106 cured patients and 8 deaths.

Surinamese physician Ruben del Prado notes that government measures have been relaxed, but Covid-19 is not. On the contrary, it is now more important than ever that we, as individual, sensible people, realize and apply our own responsibility to protect ourselves and other people in our society from this virus. First of all, this must be done by observing the known hygiene and distance measures. Just as important as before is to wear a mouth-nose cover to protect others against possible virus-infected drops from your nose and mouth ”.
