TANDAG, SURIGAO DEL SUR (August 15) -? Dr. Gervacio Yparraguirre, Provincial Veterinarian, here, said while the reports on bird flu or Avian Influenza (AI) is rarely mentioned in the newspapers now, this does not mean that we are already safe of the dreaded disease.
According to Dr. Yparraguirre, it is more urgent for the province to prepare for the possible coming back of the migratory birds in the month of September because this is the period where the said birds from the other countries will migrate to the country in search for a warmer place. This time it is winter in their usual habitat.
Yparraguirre added that it is in this cycle on the onset of September where these migratory birds will move to other countries especially in areas identified to be part of their usual route.
The areas could he exposed to these expected migratory birds that could also carry avian influenza and ultimately pose danger to birds and other poultry?, Yparraguirre said.
The provincial veterinarian reported that the Provincial Task Forces (PTF) in the entire Caraga Region are continuously coordinating with each other including those in the municipalities.
It was also learned from Yparraguirre that these LGUs have their municipal plans on avian influenza were approved by the Sangguniang Bayan for funding next year.
Yparraguirre stressed the threat of bird flu in our country is still there and that everybody should be alert so that we could still claim as bird flu free Philippines. [FONT=verdana,arial]
