Three months in respirator with swine influenza
A man in the 50's from Aust-Agder has been in respirator for three months due to swine influenza. He was infected by the H1N1 virus on a trip to the United States, and was admitted to hospital in Arendal 23 July.
He has also been admitted a period to the Rikshospitalet, but is now back in intensive care in Arendal.
- "He is still dependent on the respirator, and the condition is severe", said clinic manager Paul Friis to Dagbladet.
The man does not belong to the so-called risk group.
Six seriously ill
The man from Aust-Agder is one of six patients in the country as of Friday was seriously ill and confined to intensive treatment with swine flu. A patient is in hospital in T?nsberg, one at St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, and three at Rikshospitalet.
The man from Aust-Agder has a weakened immune system due to the H1N1 virus. So he has a bacterial infection of the lungs.
- "This is a very special case. In most severe cases, the lungs and breathing function fails. There are also examples of renal failure due to swine flu", says Friis.

Cured after a few days
The remaining eight patients have become healthy again after a few days of treatment.
- "It is exactly the same virus that has been proven, but the infection can turn out very differently", said clinic manager Friis.
