Mysterious illness rapidly spreading in Kassala

Altaghyeer acquired information from medical sources and locals in Kassala confirming the rapid spreading of a mysterious disease in the western part of the city contracted by hundreds of locals in the past few days.

An anonymous medical source revealed that symptoms include “pain and severe joint rigor”, indicating that patients were firstly admitted with the illness eight days ago and doctors at that time thought they had rheumatism manifestations. And he added “we immediately noticed the strange nature of the disease and its rapid spread, also laboratory test on some patients proved that they don’t have malaria, which is quite common in the area”, and he said the disease is spreading in parts of Banat and Western Ghash neighborhoods, which are considered the most populated in Kassala. The doctor who refused to give his name in fear of penalties, expressed his surprise of the silence of the ministry of health and officials on an issue that became widely known within the medical field in Kassala, adding “thank God despite the large number of patients no fatalities were reported but the prognosis of this mysterious illness is unknown and it could be open to all possibilities”.

In a related context, one of Banat neighborhood inhabitants (western Kassala) said that the illness is widespread in their area....

In western Ghash neighborhood one individual revealed the close relationship with two of the disease’s victims, which he confirmed is widespread in a number of areas on the western bank of Ghash River. Pointing out that locals suspect that the illness is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Kassala governor: 'Seven die of chikungunya'
September 14 - 2018 KASSALA

Governor Adam Jamaa of Kasala state has acknowledged the death of seven people from chikungunya fever. More than 6,000 people have been infected in the recently confirmed outbreak of the virus.

Jamaa made his statements to the press. On Monday the emergency department at the federal Ministry of Health already reported that there are 6,250 cases of chikungunya in Sudan?s northeastern state.

There also seem to be multiple reports of a haemorrhagic fever on twitter from the past week. The numbers being reported are around 100,000 infections with 120 fatalities. Such a high mortality from Chikungunya alone is unlikely. Possible that Cholera is also active. South Sudan has not reported to UNICEF ESAR this year, but there have been reported cases in neighboring Uganda, Kenya, and especially DR Congo. - Ro

45 dead from chikungunya in Kassala
October 4 - 2018 KASSALA

The Central Sudanese Doctors? Committee has announced the death of 45 people of chikungunya* fever, popularly known as kankasha in Kassala Teaching Hospital, service centres, and a number of regular health facilities. They have also recorded more than 16,800 cases of infection.

In a statemen, the committee highlighted that some of the deaths have not been reported to the health institutions. There are also cases of suspected dengue fever in the states of El Gedaref and El Gezira and the committee warned of the danger of health conditions in Sudan.

The Federal Ministry of Health and the state government denied any deaths. Commissioner Osman Mutasim confirmed at a press conference that the total number of cases is 14,300.

Health sources in El Gedaref state reported 44 cases of chikungunya fever until Monday.
