Planning goes ahead for polio vaccinations in South Kordofan and Blue Nile in November
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Ali Al-Za?tari, said in an interview that the United Nations had been informed by senior Government officials that the Government of Sudan had agreed to a two week cessation of hostilities in South Kordofan and Blue Nile in the first two weeks of November for polio vaccinations to take place. The vaccination campaign, which is based on a detailed plan negotiated by UNICEF and WHO with both sides, will target 147,000 children under five years of age in areas controlled by the Sudan People?s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofan and 7,000 children in Blue Nile who have not been vaccinated since the ongoing armed conflict began in 2011. According to media reports, the SPLM-N has indicated that two weeks is not enough to bring children from areas deep in the Nuba Mountains to the vaccination points and then return them back to their families.
The UN Security Council issued a press statement last week calling on the Government of Sudan and the SPLM-N to urgently resolve differences to implement the polio vaccination campaign in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Humanitarian agencies are continuing their advocacy efforts and their operational planning to enable the vaccination campaign to go ahead as soon as all outstanding issues are resolved between the Government of Sudan and the SPLM-N.

Deteriorating health situation of displaced people in Labado, East Darfur
According to UNAMID, the health situation of displaced people who have taken refuge near the UNAMID team site in Labado, East Darfur, has deteriorated and interventions from the humanitarian community are urgently required. The hospital in Labado town has been closed since April due to insecurity. Currently the UNAMID clinic is the only health centre providing the displaced community with health services. According to UNAMID between 120 to 130 people visit the clinic every week. The UNAMID clinic does not have enough medical supplies and lacks maternal care facilities.
The entire population of Labado town ? an estimated 25,000 people according to HAC ? fled the town following fighting between SAF and an armed movement in April 2013. Some of the displaced people sought refuge at the UNAMID team site in Labado while others moved to displaced people?s camps in Nyala in South Darfur. The displaced people have not returned to Labado and according to the last World Food Programme (WFP) food distribution in September, there are an estimated 7,000 displaced people currently sheltering near the UNAMID team site.

Whooping cough outbreak in North Darfur
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of 20 October the 30 people have been diagnosed with whooping cough in North Darfur?s El Sireaf locality, with one fatality reported. Out of the 30 cases, 29 have been in children under five years of age. All reported cases are being treated and WHO and the SMoH may initiate a Pentavalent vaccination campaign targeting children under five years in the locality to prevent further outbreaks.
