The public health specialist of the Ministry of Health in Western Bahr el-Ghazal State has revealed that seventeen suspected cases of anthrax disease in humans have been reported in the State. Martin Mayen said that the first two suspected cases were reported in February and fifteen more cases were reported to his office this week from Mabior Abiem and Nyin Akok of Marial Bay Payam.

Anthrax is a bacterial disease that primarily affects animals, but can be transmitted to humans through consumption of infected meat, or contact with an infected carcass. Mayen urged people not to eat meat from any animal unless they know how it died, and how long it has been dead.

Anthrax samples sent to USA for further analysis
Tuesday, 15 March 2011 14:05 Health >>> .The Ministry of Health in southern Sudan has sent samples of the over twenty (21) suspected cases of anthrax in Western Bihar el Gazal and Warrap states to the Centers for Disease Control in the USA for further analysis.


The Director General for Community and Public Health, Lul Riek told Radio Miraya that they are currently on the ground to conduct further testing on the livestock in the highly suspected areas.
