Highlights:

73 localities (39%) across 11 States (61%) reporting dengue fever cases as of 28 Jan 2023.

A total of 5,358 suspected cases and 844 confirmed cases have been reported with an attack rate of 3.9/10,000 population.

From total VHF Susp cases in White Nile; 3 were co-infection (Dengue + Chikungunya); 49 were Chikungunya and 32 were Dengue Fever cases.

Majority of suspected cases 708 (13%) were reported in epi week 45-2022 followed by 659 (12%) suspected cases in epi week 44-2022.

Sudan: Dengue Fever in Sudan - Two Dead, At Least 169 Confirmed Cases in Khartoum and El Gedaref

Khartoum / El Gedaref — Sudan's Federal Minister of Health, Dr Haisam Ibrahim, announced yesterday that dengue fever had emerged in the Khartoum and El Gedaref for the first time, noting that two separate deaths from symptoms related to dengue fever, also referred to as haemorrhagic fever, were recorded in both locations.

At a press conference held in Khartoum yesterday, the minster stated Khartoum had recorded 110 confirmed cases and 169 suspected cases, while El Gedaref had recorded 59 confirmed cases and 80 suspected cases.

Dr Ibrahim stated that 104 cases were confirmed in Ombadda in Omdurman, as well as five cases in the Karari locality.

He emphasized that the cases had nothing to do with Rift Valley fever, which affects animals.

Haitham pointed out that entomological surveys confirmed the presence of vector-borne mosquitoes in most states, attributing the extensive spread of the disease to the "cessation of routine operations related to disease control during the last three years", as a result of Sudan's economic, political, and security conditions.

Sudan: Dengue and Malaria Cases Rise in Khartoum

Khartoum / Omdurman — The Ministry of Health in Khartoum has stressed the need for urgent action to control the dengue fever outbreak, along with an increase in malaria infections.

Jihan Eisa, Director of the Early Preparedness Department of the Emergency and Epidemiology Department at the Ministry, said that the situation in greater Khartoum requires "concerted efforts" and a systematic approach at the coordinating briefing of partners and relevant authorities on Monday.

Amani Ahmed, reinforcement official at the Emergency and Epidemic Department, added that 50 per cent of dengue fever cases are present in homes. "This makes containment quite costly," she said

The Director of Emergency and Epidemic Control at Khartoum Health Mohamed El Tijani said that the number of confirmed dengue fever cases rose from 487 on Friday to 613 at the start of this week.

The number of suspected cases increased from 1,055 to 1,232. Two residents in the Sudanese capital have died.

The highest rate of infection was observed in Block 20 of the densely populated Ombadda locality in Omdurman, El Tijani said...
