Sudan: Chikungunya Fever On the Rise in Eastern Sudan

Port Sudan ? A government report has shown more than 10,000 cases of chikungunya* fever in Sudan's Red Sea state over the past four months.

A report by the Sudenese Health Ministry said the fever cases included the localities of Toker, Sawakin, Sinkat and Port Sudan

The incidence rate was about 11 cases per 1,000 people. The report denied that any deaths have occurred due to chikungunya...

Sudanese medical sources have reported an outbreak of the mosquito-borne chikungunya fever in Jebeit in Red Sea state.

Quoting medical sources, journalist Osman Hashim told Radio Dabanga that there have been 73 cases reported. He said that medics complain of a lack of intravenous solutions and poor health care in Jebeit.

Citizens called on the state government to speed-up intervention to curb the spread of the epidemic...

9 December 2019 – The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) of Sudan reported 15 new cases of chikungunya during epidemiological week 49 (1–7 December) of 2019. The cumulative number of reported cases this year is 225 including five associated deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 2.2%. Among all reported cases, 64% were female and 68% were older than 15 years of age. The most affected age group were those between 15 and 29.9 years, who accounted for 38% of all cases. Currently, seven states are reporting chikungunya cases, namely Al Jazirah, East Darfur, Kassala, Sennar, South Darfur, West Darfur and White Nile. The most affected among them are West Darfur (172 cases) and East Darfur (24 cases).
Among the total number of cases, 87% complained of fever. Other frequent symptoms included joint pain followed by headache (78% and 64% respectively). Only 6% had bleeding.
Blood samples were collected from 155 patients, with 49 showing positive and 68 negative, as reported by the National Public Health Laboratory of Sudan. Results for 38 samples are still pending.
WHO continues to provide leadership and support for activities with health authorities and partners to respond to this ongoing chikungunya outbreak, including case management, surveillance, laboratory investigations and risk communication. Entomological surveillance and vector control measures are also being implemented.

17 December 2019 – The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) of Sudan reported 17 new cases of chikungunya during epidemiological week 50 (8–14 December) of 2019. The cumulative number of reported cases this year is 243 including five associated deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 2.05%. Among all reported cases, 64% were female and 68% were older than 15 years of age. The most affected age group were those between 15 and 29.9 years, who accounted for 38% of all cases. Currently, seven states are reporting chikungunya cases, namely Al Jazirah, East Darfur, Kassala, Sennar, South Darfur, West Darfur and White Nile. The most affected state is West Darfur, reporting 71% of the total cases.
Among the total number of cases, 87% complained of fever. Other frequent symptoms included joint pain followed by headache (78% and 64% respectively). Only 6% had bleeding.
Blood samples were collected from 163 patients, with 52 testing positive, as reported by the National Public Health Laboratory of Sudan.
WHO continues to provide leadership and support for activities with health authorities and partners to respond to this ongoing chikungunya outbreak, including case management, surveillance, laboratory investigations and risk communication. Entomological surveillance and vector control measures are also being implemented.

24 December 2019 – The Federal Ministry of Health of Sudan reported 28 new cases of chikungunya during epidemiological week 51 (15–21 December 2019). The cumulative number of reported cases this year is 271, including 5 associated deaths, giving a case–fatality rate of 1.8%. Among all reported cases, 64% were female and 72% were older than 15 years of age. The most affected age group were those between 15 and 29.9 years, who accounted for 36.5% of all cases. Currently, 10 states are reporting chikungunya cases, namely Al Jazirah, East Darfur, Kassala, North Darfur, Sennar, South Darfur, South Kardufan, West Darfur, West Kordufan and White Nile. The most affected state is West Darfur, reporting 78.9% of total cases.
Ninety-two percent of all patients complained of fever. Other frequent symptoms included joint pain followed by headache (78% and 73%, respectively). Only 5% had bleeding.
Blood samples were collected from 182 patients, with 55 testing positive, as reported by the National Public Health Laboratory of Sudan.
WHO continues to provide leadership and support for activities with health authorities and partners to respond to this ongoing chikungunya outbreak, including case management, surveillance, laboratory investigations and risk communication. Entomological surveillance and vector control measures are also being implemented.
