16 children die of unknown disease in Central Darfur

Last week 16 children at the Garsila camps for the displaced in Wadi Salih locality, Central Darfur, died of an unidentified disease.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a Garsila camp sheikh reported that seven children died in the Jebel camp, four in Riyadh camp, and five children in the Ardeba camp.

?The children were suddenly hit by high fever and vomiting. At the health centres of the camps, their cases were diagnosed as malaria, as usual when the cause is unclear. They received anti-malaria treatment, after which they die the following days.?

The sheikh appealed to the health organisations in Central Darfur to intervene and ?save the children?s lives?.

I wonder if there is any info out there indicating a transmission chain or if this is an exposure to chem/bio agent or limited zoonotic transmission. Its curious that its a few kids here and there at these camps.

KALMA/EL FASHER (31 Oct.) - Three women have died as a result of an unknown fever in Kalma camp, South Darfur. The North Darfur Ministry of Health has pledged to fill the gap of health services in the state by constructing health units in El Fasher.

The Secretary-General of the camp, east of Nyala city, reported the deaths of Aziza Ibrahim Bakaht, Maryam Mohamad Hamid, and the 11-year-old Jawahir Abdallah Hilal on Wednesday. Saleh Issa added that the symptoms of the disease are headache, severe fever, diarrhoea, and bleeding from the nose and mouth. He pointed out that many of the cases have been reported to the camp administration.

I wonder if there is any info out there indicating a transmission chain or if this is an exposure to chem/bio agent or limited zoonotic transmission. Its curious that its a few kids here and there at these camps.

Is it possible that adult deaths pass without comment? I would think they are a frequent occurence for one reason or the other in the refugee camps, and unless death rates rise above a 'baseline', might not be noticed.

More children die in Central Darfur refugee camp

Ten Chadian refugees, including six children, have died in two weeks, because of an unknown fever spreading in a camp in Azum locality, Central Darfur. A medical source in El Gezira state released that 79 people died of malaria this year.

Eisa Ahmed Saeed, the chairman of the health committee in Um Shalaya camp, told Radio Dabanga that the death toll has risen from eight to ten since Thursday. One of the two deceased was a 2-year-old, Ismail Abdallah Adam. The other was an 11-year-old girl, Hawa Abdallah Mohamed. They died from high fever, diarrhoea, and swelling of the body on Sunday.

Saeed revealed that a delegation of the Central Darfur Health Department, headed by its director of Epidemiology Ahmed Zein, paid a visit to the camp on Thursday. They learned about the rising number of deaths, the causes of death, and the symptoms of the unknown fever.
