Study Uses Wearable Devices To Determine Spread of Flu in Schools

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh have given wearable electronic devices to 450 school children as part of a study examining how influenza can spread among students, the AP/Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (AP/Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 11/5).

The study -- called Social Mixing And Respiratory Transmission in Schools, or SMART -- is funded by a $700,000 CDC grant and came in response to the H1N1 flu pandemic that affected more than one million Americans in 2009.

Study Details

On Monday, participating students -- who attend elementary or middle school in Pennsylvania's Washington County -- received lanyards with remote sensors the size of a beeper. Students were asked to wear the devices around their necks for three days.

The battery-powered devices emit a signal that can detect another student's device when they are in close proximity. Such encounters are recorded electronically.
