Re: Students At VCU Test Positive For Influenza A

VCU has the largest University enrollment in Virginia (I have another daughter who played soccer there for 4 years, but has graduated).

VCU and the VCU Medical Center are operating on a regular work and academic schedule.

To the University and VCU Health System Communities:

VCU's <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />Student Health Center late today reported that four students who visited the Center have tested positive for Influenza A and have mild illness. The state health department is no longer recommending routine testing specifically for H1N1 "Swine" Flu. However, health department officials have advised us that most Influenza A cases right now are caused by the H1N1 virus, and that it should be treated the same as any other case of the flu. Steps have been taken to isolate the affected students from spreading the virus. Nevertheless, we are notifying the VCU and VCU Health System communities so that everyone can take common sense precautions to avoid catching the flu.

The CDC recommends taking these actions to stay healthy:
 •
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
 • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

We will advise you if there are any further developments.
