Strong earthquake kills at least 175 in southern China

BEIJING ? A strong earthquake in southern China's Yunnan province toppled thousands of homes on Sunday, killing at least 175 people and injuring more than 1,400.

About 12,000 homes collapsed in Ludian, a densely populated county of 429,000 people located around 277 miles northeast of Yunnan province's capital, Kunming, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. at a depth of 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was in Longtoushan township, 14 miles southwest of the city of Zhaotong, the Ludian county seat.

China earthquake kills hundreds in Yunnan province

At least 367 people have been killed and some 1,300 injured by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in south-west China, state news agency Xinhua says.

A major rescue and relief operation is under way.

State broadcaster CCTV said the earthquake was the strongest to hit the province in 14 years.

Xinhua said about 12,000 homes had collapsed in Ludian, a county of some 439,000 people, north-east of Yunnan province's capital, Kunming.

All of the casualties reported so far are in Qiaojia County of the Zhaotong region, which appeared to be the hardest hit.

China earthquake: Troops join race to aid survivors

China has deployed 2,500 soldiers to the south-western province of Yunnan to help search for survivors after an earthquake killed at least 398 people.

More than 1,800 people were injured when the magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck on Sunday.

Attempts to reach the epicentre have been hampered by heavy rain, with some rescuers forced to travel on foot.

The government had sent 2,000 tents, 3,000 folding beds, 3,000 quilts and 3,000 coats to the disaster zone, Xinhua said.

Chen Wangchang, head of Ludian County hospital in Yunnan's Zhaotong City, said temporary tented medical facilities had been set up.

"All the houses had already collapsed when we arrived. Dead bodies were everywhere and there were a lot of injured people."

The official death toll after a strong earthquake struck China's Yunnan province has risen to 410, as concerns grow about the possibility of landslips and flooding.

More than 2,300 people have been injured and 12 are still missing after the magnitude 6.3 quake struck.

Chinese state media reports say the weekend quake triggered landslides that have blocked rivers and created large and growing bodies of water which could unleash further destruction on survivors.

"A huge quake lake containing more than 3,000 cubic metres of water has inundated dozens of homes and continues to threaten nearby villages," the Xinhua news agency quoted hydrological officials as saying.

"Its water level is increasing at a speed of 30 cubic metres per hour, putting seven power stations in the lower reaches in danger," Xinhua said.
