Medical offices in Acadiana are seeing a high number of patients, all dealing with the same symptoms.

The patients have stomach flu-type problems.

Now, the state has started to take a closer look at the situation.

Doctors at Acadiana Family Physicians say the number of stomach virus cases is up. Dr. Chad Manuel says he normally sees two or three cases a week. Right now, he's seeing about eight to ten. The cases often hit several people within a short period of time.

Dr. Manuel says it usually comes in waves and is usually a viral illness that's easily spread. He says that's why it occurs in clusters.

Dr. Manuel says the virus going around Acadiana right now is more severe than usual. In fact, officials with the Office of Public Health have started an active surveillance of the situation. If needed, they will gather lab results from doctor's offices or hospitals to access the cases. For now, health officials say doing simple things like washing your hands several times a day is the most important thing you can do to keep a virus like this from spreading. Dr. Manuel says there are several symptoms with each case.

He says people usually come in with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, cramping, bloating, low-grade fever, body aches, fatigue...basically not feeling very well.

Manuel says it's not routine for the state to begin looking into a problem like this, but he does say there's a good chance the number of cases could fade out over the next few weeks.

Doctors say people can often get over a typical stomach virus within two to three days.

Dr. Manuel says you should make sure you see a physician if the symptoms are severe.

That includes feeling dizzy or weak.

He says you should also watch for symptoms of dehydration.
