TNN 6 August 2009, 04:29am IST

KOLKATA: The city will soon get its second BS-III laboratory for research and detection of bird flu. Being imported from Hong Kong, the modular
laboratory will be set up at the University of Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Belgachia, at a cost of Rs 5 crore.

"We need a modern laboratory for quick detection of bird flu. Hopefully, we will be able to get faster reports in case bird flu breaks out again," said Dhruba Chakraborty, a senior teacher and researcher of the university. The poultry industry in the country has lost Rs 700 crore due to bird flu so far. West Bengal has been one of the worst affected with 55 blocks being severely affected since 2006.
