St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Federation has recorded its first confirmed case of the Chikungunya virus. A statement from the Ministry of Health Thursday morning indicated that the 30 year old male resident of St. Kitts was hospitalized and discharged without complications two weeks ago. Confirmation testing was done by the Trinidad-based Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).
Speaking to WINN FM Thursday morning, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Martin assured that there was no need to panic...

St. Kitts now has 21 confirmed cases of chikungunya, up from one in February, with an unspecified amount of suspected cases on Nevis, according to Dr. Patrick Martin, chief medical officer with the Ministry of Health.
No fatalities from the virus have been reported in the Federation, he said. While fatalities are rare, there have been 14 deaths attributed to the virus since the latest outbreak, with nine of those on Martinique, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)....

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The number is in the hundreds, in terms of cases of Chikungunya in St Kitts and Nevis, according to Chief Medical Officer, Patrick Martin.
"We’re up to about thirty confirmed cases up to about a week ago, but there are more suspect cases, or cases that are clinically confirmed," Dr. Martin said Monday, in giving an update on the situation in the Federation.
"We don't have to do blood tests on everybody. Blood tests are being reserved now for persons who may have a presentation that is unusual or unexpected. If a person heaven forbid, requires intensive care, well then you test. But ordinarily right now we're not testing everybody anymore...just like throughout the Caribbean, the number is in the hundreds basically," Dr. Martin said.
Close to twenty countries in the region have been affected by the mosquito-borne disease.
Some of those affected by Chikungunya describe it as a very painful experience.

CMO: Chikungunya Could Be Around For The Next 12 Months

The number of confirmed cases of Chikungunya will continue to rise in St. Kitts-Nevis as the viral disease could linger for another 12 months.
?It?s going to stay here for several more months until it abates because it?s a new disease,? Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Martin told The Observer. ?It will probably take another 9 to 12 months to go through the entire population.?
This does mean that everyone in the Federation will contract Chikungunya, he stressed.
?The numbers are not showing any explosive rise in new cases; the numbers are showing what it?s supposed to be for a new disease.?
...The disease reared its head in the region for the first time in December 2013. St. Kitts had its first confirmed case in February and Nevis in July. CARPHA?s August 11 data shows 28 confirmed and 31 suspected cases in Federation. No deaths have been reported...
