Mock drill simulates countywide flu outbreak

To the unsuspecting passerby, a mock drill Wednesday at the St. Joseph County fairgrounds may have looked like a major emergency situation.
What unfolded, however, was a joint exercise involving a Michigan National Guard unit from Shiawassee County, the St. Joseph County Sheriff?s Department and its Emergency Services division, and the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph District Health Department.
The morning-long drill was in coordination between police and outside security in the event a near-riot situation ever takes place in St. Joseph County.
Drills were conducted in metropolitan areas throughout Michigan Wednesday.
Sheriff Brad Balk said the scenario executed Wednesday would have been similar if circumstances in a real-life development had occurred...
