St Anne's girl died of pneumonia: Report

PUNE: The post-mortem report of Reeda Shaikh's classmate, who died on Wednesday, says that she was suffering from bronco-pneumonia, said Arun
Jamkar, the dean of Sassoon hospital on Thursday.

Notably, Reeda Shaikh was the first victim of H1N1 in the country. The VII class student of St Anne's high school, a classmate of Reeda, had died at a Mission Hospital near Salisbury Park in Gultekdi on Wednesday. Her body was taken to Sassoon General Hospital for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.

Meanwhile, R R Pardeshi, deputy health officer of PMC, told that a team of doctors will visit the school on Friday where the girl was studying. "We will tell them there is no any reason to panic," he said.

Pardeshi said, "We visited the girl's home. The family members of the girl are under going medical check up while we keep a track of their health. A disinfection drive has been carried out within the area of girl's residence as a precaution."

"The girl was fasting on Sunday. On the same day she got fever. She visited private doctors, but her condition continued to deteriorate. The girl was brought to our hospital at 10.15 am on Wednesday in an unconscious state. Her pulse was not palpable and her blood pressure had fallen and was not recordable. She died around 11 am the same day," said Jamkar. He said that the post-mortem reports did not show any signs of H1N1 infection.

Hmm, Reeda died 24 days ago. Seems like more than a coincidence that her classmate died of pneumonia. No mention of a sample sent for H1N1 testing.

for the H1N1 virus.

One of the students a friend of Reeda is in the ninth standard, while the other is in the fourth standard.

Panic sets in after death of another St Anne's student
The death of 12-year-old Rachana Oswal, a student of St Anne's School barely 23 days after the death of the first H1N1 victim, Reeda Shaikh's created panic as to whether the virus has struck at the same school again.

However, according to Lynette Wilson, physical training teacher at St Anne's School, Rachana's parents have informed them that their daughter died of "natural" causes. Wilson also said the school will remain shut on Thursday to condole her death.

Even as the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital authorities said preliminary examination showed that Rachana had gastroenteritis, they preferred to send her to Sassoon General Hospital as H1N1 virus was prevalent in Pune. She was also a student of St Anne's School which had reported the country's first swine flu death and hence the authorities did not want to take any chances, said Dr Timothy Jonas, medical superintendent at Adventist Hospital.

The Sassoon Hospital casualty ward reported her "dead on arrival" and sent her body for autopsy. The girl's relatives, when contacted, told The Indian Express that Rachana had been fasting as part of Paryushan Parva an annual religious festival of the Jains. The festival is celebrated with fasting, reading of scriptures and observing silence.

"On Wednesday morning, she woke up and complained of giddiness and then collapsed," one of the relatives said.

The medical history as narrated by her parents showed that she had been unwell and had vomited blood. "She was brought to the out-patient department in a critical state and was practically gasping for breath," said Jonas, while pointing out that on preliminary examination she had gastroenteritis. "However, with H1N1 virus prevalent in Pune, we decided to send her to Sassoon Hospital."

However, Rachana's death came at a time when the school had just reopened after the flu break.

Rachana's parents also took their seven-year-old son from St Vincent's School during the morning hours and parents were seen asking teachers about the safety of their wards. "We have told parents that if they do not feel comfortable to send their children, please don't do so," one of the teachers said.

There was a sense of panic among the health officials also. Dr Ashok Ladda, joint director of Health Services, said he was briefly told about Rachana's death but the panic was more because she was a student of St Anne's School.

Ladda said Rachana was in a bad shape when she was reported to the casualty at Adventist Hospital and had cardio-respiratory and pulmonary distress.

Something odd here alright. Remember the health minister said that Reeda had spread it to 85 people, and the family is suing the hospital for negligence.

#1: A 14 year old female student (Reeda Shaikh) started having symptoms of sore-throat, runny nose, headaches on 21st July for which she consulted a General Practitioner and the general symptoms improved and attended school 23.07.09. She again developed fever on 25th for which she consulted another private practitioner. Her fever continued and she was admitted to a private Nursing Home , Pune on 27th July 2009. Patient?s condition worsened and was shifted to ICU and was put on Ventilator on 29th July 2009. Patient's lung aspirate was sent to NIV Pune on 31st July 2009 and was tested positive for Swine A (H1). Patient was put on Oseltamivir on 30th July 2009. Her condition deteriorated again with multi system involvement and expired on the evening of 03.08.09.
