Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 third wave claims over 3,200 lives in just three months

ECONOMYNEXT – With 3,218 deaths and 187,076 cases in the span of just three months, the third wave of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka has been devastating to say the least.

To put the third wave – which officially began on April 15 this year – in perspective, until its arrival, Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 death toll stood at 609.

The following is a breakdown of the numbers so far, as recorded by the health ministry’s epidemiology unit:

Of the 187,076 cases of the third wave, 177,627 were detected in the community, while 6,430 tested positive for the virus at Sri Lanka’s prisons while 3,019 were returnees from abroad.

Total COVID-19 infections in the country so as of July 19 is 286,418...
