Mumps, diarrhoea in Manik Farm camp

Communicable diseases including mumps and diarrhoea have increased during the first two weeks of April among the displaced people being housed at the Menik Farm camp, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
As a response to the mumps outbreak, health education and awareness programmes are being carried out in the camp while the Health Ministry Epidemiology Unit is exploring the possibility of conducting an immunization programme against mumps.
The WHO report also said the mumps vaccine was not included in the national immunization programme.
The report said cases of chicken pox and hepatitis A were continuing to decrease while no dengue cases were reported since February.
Health services were being provided for the displaced people at the Menik Farm and the eight Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) supported by the WHO are continuing to conduct disease surveillance activities at the camp.
The report also said some of the health partners were already withdrawing their support to Menik Farm which putting the Health Ministry into great difficulty in carrying out health education programmes in the camps.
