Some 750,817 people belonging to 198,147 families have been affected by floods caused by lashing rains in several districts in the country with nine deaths, nine injured and four persons missing according to Army.

Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, Nuwara Eliya, Moneragala, Badulla, Kegalle and Kandy Districts were reportedly affected by floods.

Disaster Management Centre said 811 houses had been fully destroyed while 2948 houses had been partly damaged by the floods. According to the Centre some 55,936 [people] belonging to 14,519 families have been displaced and had been housed at 138 camps that have been opened.

Rain continued to wreak havoc yesterday breaching the bunds of 200 irrigation tanks and destroying 100,000 paddy acres, while 832,447 persons have been displaced, 937 houses fully damaged and 4001 houses partly damaged, according the latest updates by the Disaster Management Centre. Meanwhile schools in the North Central province had been closed until further notice, officials said.

The torrential rains have left 13 dead directly as a result of floods, and several others in connected mishaps.

More than 300,000 forced to flee homes by Sri Lanka flooding

More than 300,000 people have been forced out of their homes by flooding in Sri Lanka, with no sign of a let-up in the torrential downpour continuing to lash the island nation's east coast.

Three more people were killed by mudslides today, bringing the death toll to 21, officials said.

The government's Disaster Management Centre said more than 1 million people had been affected by the rains, with 325,000 currently made homeless.

Many villages remain cut off from supplies despite a major relief effort involving tens of thousands of troops, supported by transport helicopters and naval boats.

The death toll due to floods rose to 27 by yesterday evening, as floods in some areas started receding, officials said.

Most of the areas in Batticaloa and Ampara Districts were still inundated while floods in other areas were receding as the weather in the country was improving.

Disaster Management Center said the weather had been fair in the two districts as there were no showers during Thursday night. However there had been showers yesterday though not heavy. Met Department said there were scattered showers in the area with a rain fall of 20 mm of rains in Batticaloa and

The death toll of the flood victims has increased to 27 and the number of affected persons stands at 1,055,185, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said. Nine deaths were reported from Batticaloa. Nine people have died in the Ampara District as well.

The intense cold weather took its toll on a five-month old infant in Valachchenai, Batticaloa, who succumbed to lung infection, doctors said yesterday. Director -Health Services of the Eastern Province Dr. K. M. Thevarajan told Daily Mirror yesterday that the parents of this infant had been in a welfare camp after being displaced by the floods, worst to hit the district in a century.

Dr. Thevarajan said that the infant had got a lung infection, and it had been aggravated by the intense cold weather eventually the taking its life.

Thirty two deaths were reported, 49 persons were injured and 12 persons are reported missing due to the floods and rain affecting the country. More than 1,056,255 persons belonging to 282,953 families have been affected due to floods and heavy rain in Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee , Vavuniya and several other districts in the Central, North and East. More than 339,200 are currently housed in displaced camps, the Disaster Management Center said.

US assisting flood victims Saturday, 15 January 2011 15:06
The US today said that it is in the process of helping and will further assist those affected by floods in Sri Lanka. US Ambassador Patricia A. Butenis announced that the United States Government is donating nearly $300,000 in assistance to provide a variety of goods and services to the people hardest hit by the flood disaster.

More rainy weather is expected in the North, North Central, Eastern and Uva provinces during this evening and tomorrow morning the Meteorological Department told Daily Mirror online.

However the adverse weather experienced island wide is expected to decrease during the coming days while the monsoon affects will also be weakened during the next couple of weeks, the Met. Department said.

Meanwhile the number of deaths due to floods and heavy rain in several Districts has arisen to 37, 18 of them being reported from the Batticaloa District, the Disaster Management Center said.

Commission provides €2 million for flood victims in Sri Lanka

Today, the European Commission decided to provide emergency funding of €2 million for humanitarian assistance to flood victims in Sri Lanka. Some of the heaviest rains in Eastern and North Central Sri Lanka in recent weeks have resulted in significant flooding affecting close to 1 million people. This action will be implemented through international aid agencies to provide primarily emergency food assistance, water and sanitation, and emergency relief items.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The United Nations is appealing for aid for Sri Lanka, where at least 32 people have died and more than 300,000 have been displaced in flooding.

"I urge donors to generously support priority needs such as mosquito nets, clean water and food," humanitarian coordinator Neil Buhne said Saturday.

The move comes days after flooding disrupted the livelihoods of many in the eastern region where vast rice fields, ready for harvest, are now under water.

Rice shortage likely in the wake of Sri Lankan rains
THE large-scale devastation triggered by the current torrential rains in the paddy-growing districts of Sri Lanka is raising the possibility of a rice shortage coupled with food price rises.

More than 50 per cent of the Maha harvest has been lost to the rains, while at least 80 per cent of the paddy lands in the Batticaloa district and 70 per cent of such lands in the Trincomalee and Ampara districts respectively, have been destroyed by the floods, informed sources said.

Sri Lanka's problems on the food front will be compounded by a severe shortage of rice in the world market. Only Viet Nam has an exportable rice surplus at present and the chances are that it will jack- up its rice price in these circumstances, they said. Thus, a rice shortage and rising food prices in the not too distant future cannot be ruled out.

HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

- Rains have remained moderate over the past 24 hours and flood waters are beginning to recede in some areas. According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), as of 16 January 09:00hrs, a total 1,079,842 persons have been affected,with 38 deaths, 51 persons injured and four missing. Some 204,118 persons remain displaced in 435 temporary relocation centres in 12 districts.

- As the floods recede new areas are accessible and people have started to return home, however, having significant humanitarian needs to support resumption of their lives.

- A Flash Appeal to support the mobilisation of humanitarian assistance towards Sri Lanka's floods affected and displaced population is anticipated to be launched on Thursday, 20 January 2011.

A DMC report said there were only 4,493 displaced families in 80 camps as of yesterday.

Some 5594 houses were completely destroyed and 22, 483 were partly damaged due to the floods while 43 deaths were reported with 51 people being injured.
