14 students confirmed with meningitis in Uva Province

Colombo, May 22 (Daily Mirror) - Health officials have confirmed that 10 students showing symptoms of meningitis are currently receiving treatment at the Welimada Base Hospital, while a further 18 students with similar symptoms are being treated at the Diyatalawa Base Hospital.

According to hospital sources, a group of schoolchildren from the Welimada, Keppetipola and Udaperuwa areas had been admitted to hospital after developing symptoms associated with meningitis. Doctors confirmed that four students receiving treatment at the Welimada Base Hospital had tested positive for the disease.

The remaining students who showed symptoms have undergone medical tests, and authorities are awaiting the reports.

Hospital sources said the 10 students receiving inpatient treatment at Ward No. 1 of the Welimada Base Hospital include five children under the age of 14 and five older students.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Diyatalawa Base Hospital stated that 10 out of the 18 students currently receiving treatment there had also been confirmed to have meningitis, while the others are undergoing further medical examinations after displaying symptoms linked to the illness​..

Meningitis cases rise amid Vesak season; health authorities urge vigilance

Colombo, May 25 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have raised concerns over a rise in meningitis cases reported from several parts of the country, with the first patient identified at a school in Deniyaya.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Palitha Karunapema said that 28 meningitis patients had been reported from Diyatalawa, while 13 cases were recorded in Walimada. He added that 25 patients were currently receiving treatment at Rikillagaskada Hospital.

According to health officials, cases detected at the Deniyaya school were identified as viral meningitis, which has reportedly spread mainly among schoolchildren.

The main symptoms of the disease include headache, vomiting and fever. Several affected individuals had been admitted to hospitals, and authorities said their condition had improved after receiving treatment...

150 school students found to have contracted meningitis - one student is serious

​Health authorities state that as of yesterday, nearly 150 school students suffering from meningitis, or brain fever, have been identified from various parts of the island. The highest number of these patients, over sixty, has been reported from the Central Province.

Of these, thirty-five patients are currently receiving inpatient treatment at hospitals in Badulla, Welimada, Diyatalawa, and Uva Paranagama Hibiliyagaha Maditta.​..
