Health authorities sound alarm as over 30,000 dengue cases reported this year

May 04, Colombo: National Dengue Control Unit Medical Officer and Assistant Secretary of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), Dr. Lahiru Kodituwakku said that the number of dengue cases that have been reported in Sri Lanka has exceeded 30,000 in the last four months of this year.

According to the SLMA data during this time period, 15 persons had died of the mosquito-borne disease.

Addressing a press conference held in Colombo yesterday (03) Dr. Kodituwakku said the highest number of dengue patients are reported from the districts of Colombo and Gampaha in the Western Province.​..

Director, Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit, University of Sri Jayewardenepura Dr. Chandima Jeevandara yesterday said that a research conducted by the university has confirmed that Dengue type 3 serotype is spreading in the country.

He said that the number of dengue patients reported from the country witnessed a sharp increase in 2017 with the change of dengue variant spreading in the county as patients have not developed immunity to face the new dengue type.

Dr. Jeevandara said that almost all samples tested at laboratories were found to be Dengue 3 serotype.

“Over 5,000 schoolchildren across the country were tested to ascertain their level of antibody against Dengue and 24 per cent of children had developed antibodies against the disease. However, over 50 per cent of children in the Trincomalee District have developed the antibody against the virus...​

June 11, Colombo: The number of dengue patients reported in the country has increased to nearly 43,000 and 25 percent of them are school children, Dr. Nalin Ariyaratne, Director of Dengue Control Unit said.

The authorities urge the public to destroy mosquito breeding grounds around the houses and schools as 42,961 dengue cases have been reported so far this year and 3,557 dengue cases have been reported this month alone.

This year, the highest number of dengue cases have been reported from the Western Province with 21,435 cases. Gampaha district reported the highest with 9,554 cases, 9143 cases from Colombo district and 2,738 from the Kalutara District have been reported...​

Over 50,000 dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka so far this year

COLOMBO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka's Healthy Ministry said on Wednesday that the number of reported dengue cases this year has passed the 50,000 mark.

The unit said that a total of 50,264 cases have been reported so far this year.

The highest number of cases was reported in Gampaha district, the second-most populous district in Sri Lanka.

The unit also identified 43 high-risk areas for dengue and is carrying out mosquito eradication campaigns.

A total of 31 dengue-related deaths have been reported so far in 2023, the unit said...​

COLOMBO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka for 2023 passed the 60,000 mark on Saturday, the data released by the Epidemiology Unit shows.

As of Aug. 19, Sri Lanka reported 60,136 dengue cases in 2023, the data shows.

Sri Lanka: more than 70,000 cases of dengue recorded and 43 deaths

The number of dengue cases recorded in Sri Lanka exceeded the 70,000 mark yesterday Wednesday, the epidemiology department of the Ministry of Health announced on its website.

As of November 8, 70,178 cases have been reported, with the highest number in Colombo district (14,884), which is the most populated region in the country, he said, adding that 43 people have died from the disease since the start of the year.

Health authorities said the number of dengue cases had increased due to the prevailing rainy weather.

They urged residents to keep their surroundings clean and destroy mosquito breeding grounds.

According to official data, more than 75,000 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in Sri Lanka in 2022.

The number of people infected with dengue in Sri Lanka has risen to 72,840. In the month of November alone, 4,347 infected people have been reported.
The highest number of infected people is reported in the Western Province and the number is 34,645 (47.5 percent).
A total of 1,532 cases of dengue were reported in Sri Lanka in week 44 (30 October to 5 November), an increase of 27.2% compared to 1,204 cases reported in week 43 (23 to 29 October 2023). As of November 5, a total of 69,505 dengue cases have been reported in Sri Lanka in 2023.

Sri Lankans between the ages of 15 and 49 were affected by dengue more than those of other age categories, Dr. Sashini Ranaweera of the National Dengue Control Unit said.

Most of the dengue deaths were reported among the same age group, she said.

“So it’s the country’s workforce that’s most affected by dengue,” she said.​..

Sri Lanka is seeing a massive spike in Dengue cases across the country with the Western Province recording over 35,000 cases which is the highest in terms of provinces.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, the tally of dengue cases recorded for 2023 has surpassed the 76,000 mark.

As of November 30, a total of 76,086 cases have been reported in 2023, with the highest number being from the Colombo District, which stood at 16,125.

Besides, the month of November has logged 7,593 Dengue cases, which is the highest in four months...

The number of Dengue cases have spiked in the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces.

Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Nalin Ariyaratne says that the number of Dengue cases in the Kandy district is gradually increasing as well.

A “Dengue prevention month” was also declared for the Kandy district from November 22 to December22.

The number of Dengue cases reported across Sri Lanka has increased to 78,322.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's healthcare system is facing increasing pressure due to a surge in dengue cases, with concerns raised about delays in patient hospitalization leading to complications.

Health officials are urging the public to be vigilant and seek medical advice promptly if they experience fever persisting for more than two days.

According to Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, these delays in seeking treatment can worsen dengue symptoms.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The number of dengue-related deaths reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has increased to 55.

The National Dengue Control Unit of the Ministry of Health said five deaths were reported over the past week.

It added that a 58-year-old man from Battaramulla, a 32-year-old woman from Kurunegala, a 67-year-old woman from Kilinochchi, a 23-year-old man from Kopay, Jaffna, and an 11-year-old boy from Jaffna died of dengue.

86,576 dengue patients have been reported in Sri Lanka so far this year.

The National Dengue Control Unit said 10,082 dengue cases were reported this month alone.

62 MOH divisions have been named as dengue high-risk areas.

The highest number of dengue cases, 18,309, are reported from the Colombo district...

The number of dengue cases detected in the country increases twice a year based on the monsoon season, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), says.

Dr. Samaraweera said that the number of reported patients increased in the middle of the year and at the year end.

“There were very few reported cases in September, but the numbers spiked in October, November and December. There were over 11,000 cases in December alone.”

Dr. Samaraweera added that health officials feared that a similar number of cases would be reported in January 2024. This is why a dengue eradication week was declared from 07 January.

“There were over 88,000 cases in 2023, but only 58 deaths were reported. This was the lowest death rate since 2001, i.e., how many have died out of 100 cases.”

He went on to say that at least half the dengue cases each year are reported from the western province.

“Most cases are reported from Colombo, and Gampaha usually comes in second. However, the current monsoon affects the North and East more and in December, the second-highest dengue cases were reported from the Jaffna District. There were a lot of cases in the Kandy district as well.”

Dr. Samaraweera pointed out that a lot of cases are reported from the Kandy Municipal Council area.In December 2023, on average, there were about 1,000 dengue patients admitted to hospitals each day, he said....​
