More than 5,500 dengue patients had been reported so far in January 2022, National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) said. They said that 60% of those cases had been reported from the Western Province.

The Unit said that the number of dengue cases had been increasing since September 2021. 1370 cases were reported in September, 2979 in October, 4,561 in November and 8,096 cases in December were reported.

Head of the NDCU Dr. Nimanka Panilahetti said 5,500 cases were reported so far in January 2022. Apart from the Western Province, large numbers of cases had been detected from Galle and Kurunegala city limits...

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Health says dengue has developed into an epidemic in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Shilanthi Seneviratne, Community Physician, Specialist at the National Dengue Control Unit stated that 6,896 dengue patients have been reported in the country so far in January alone.

She also stated that 8,966 Dengue patients were reported during the month of December alone, adding the rate of Dengue patients reported to the National Dengue Control Unit has slightly increased...

COLOMBO, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has registered over 8,303 cases of the dengue virus in 2022, of which 7,702 cases were reported in January, local media reported Friday.

Although the threat of the dengue virus has declined when compared to the latter part of last year, the number of cases would remain at a moderate level in the coming months as well, the local Daily Mirror quoted Shilanthi Seneviratne from the National Dengue Control Unit as saying.

Dengue tally nears 11,000, infections rise in 17 areas

Nearly 11,000 people have been infected with the potentially-fatal dengue island-wide since January, causing widespread concern among health officials.

Last month 2,962 people were infected. And up to March 3, there have been 187 infections, in addition to the 7,702 people infected in January.

Most have been detected within the Western Province.

Compared with 4,477 infected in January and February of 2021, dengue has become a widespread concern for health officials.

Fifty Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas have been flagged as high-risk. Among these, infections have risen in 17 areas.

Another 15 areas showed a persistently high number of infections.

The MOH areas of Boralesgamuwa, Attanagalla, Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Ambalangoda, Topay, Tellippalai, Nallur, Uduvil, and Mundel were newly identified as high-risk.

“Dengue is endemic in Sri Lanka,” said Dr Shilanthi Seneviratne, Consultant Community Physician of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU). Of the four types of dengue virus strains, dengue virus type 3 (DENV – 3) is presently the predominant strain in Sri Lanka. ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka dengue cases have more than doubled in the in the first 19 weeks of 2022 compared to the same period last year due to lack of pesticides and diesel to implement the prevention programs at ground levels , health officials said.

According to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) there has been a rapid increase in the number of young patients reported during the last 8 weeks and is currently active.

The number of dengue cases have jumped to 19,908 by the end of the first 19 weeks of the year, from 9,455 in the same period a year earlier.

The Public Health Inspectors (PHI) Union said, the dengue prevention programs cannot be implemented due to lack of pesticides and diesel for both dengue prevention and transportation...

COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Dengue Control Unit said that there has been a rapid increase in the number of dengue patients in the last few weeks.

The Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said that 6,684 dengue patients were identified in May.

He also told that 512 dengue patients have been reported in the first two days of June.

Specialist Dr. Samaraweera further said that 27 high-risk medical divisions have been identified where dengue is spreading rapidly...

Sri Lanka reported nearly 50,000 cases of dengue in the first eight months of 2022, local media reported.

According to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), 49,941 people have been admitted to hospitals for dengue treatment in the past eight months.

Half the cases were reported from the Western province, comprising Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts, Xinhua news agency reported quoting NDCU.

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Medical Officer Ruwan Wijemuni told journalists that 12,754 cases were reported from Colombo, 7,496 from Gampaha and 4,731 from Kalutara...

Speaking at a special media conference held yesterday (25) at the Government Information Department regarding the risk of the spread of Covid-19 and Dengue, Dr. Pannilahetti said such a high number of infected people reported in a week creates some obstacles for patient treatment management.

Nearly 1250 dengue-infected patients are being reported per week in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Health said.

The Ministry said that there is a significant increase in dengue cases at present due to the rainy weather prevalent in the country.

The Health Ministry has identified 55 Grama Niladhari areas in 06 districts as high-risk areas for the spread of the dengue virus...

SL health officials warn of major dengue outbreak

Amid a spike in the number of cases, Sri Lankan health officials have warned of a major dengue outbreak in the coming weeks due to the continued heavy rain.

So far this year, Sri Lanka has recorded over 61,000 dengue cases, compared to around 20,000 that were reported in the first 10 months of 2021.

The disease has also claimed three lives.

Sri Lanka setps up its anti-dengue fight after fresh outbreak

Colombo, Dec 30 (EFE).- Sri Lanka stepped up its fight against dengue on Friday as the country recorded its highest number of infections since 2019, following a fresh outbreak in recent weeks.

Health officials recorded over 75,000 dengue cases this year, more than double the number of infections from last year, when around 34,000 people caught the disease.

An average of 200 to 300 cases were recorded each day in the past four weeks, prompting a two-day intensive drive to control the outbreak.

The authorities asked the people to destroy mosquito breeding areas found in their homes, workplaces, and public spaces...
