A total of 8,139 suspected cases of dengue have been reported across the island over the course of this year, and there has been a spike in cases in the Colombo District, The Sunday Morning learnt.

Speaking with The Sunday Morning, National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) Director and specialist Dr. Aruna Jayasekara said that most recently, 305 confirmed dengue cases were reported and that 88 of these were from Colombo.

Noting that there seems to be an increase in dengue cases in the Colombo District, Dr. Jayasekara requested the public to remain vigilant and to take necessary precautions that would aid in curbing the spread...

Significant increase in reported cases of dengue observed

July 30, Colombo: The Health Ministry’s National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) reports a significant increase in the number of dengue patients across the country during the first half of this year, compared to last year.

Several districts in the country have been identified as dengue hotspots and dengue cases are more prevalent in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle and Hambantota districts than in other districts, NDCU mentioned.

So far in 2021 (up to 29 July 2021) 16,497 dengue patients have been reported among them, 2,997 patients were reported in June and 3,029 in July.

About 70% of the dengue patients reported from the island are from the Western Province.

The National Dengue Control Unit states that the dengue epidemic is expected to increase in the future due to the prevailing southwest monsoon rains in the island.

Joint research conducted by the NDCU, the Medical Research Institute and the Dengue Research Institute at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has identified that all four serotypes of dengue viruses, designated as DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4 are currently circulating in the island.

According to the research, DENV 2 and DENV 3 are more prevalent in the country and after a few years dengue cases of DENV 1 have also been reported in the country.

The National Dengue Control Unit points out that there is an increase in the number of dengue patients due to changes in the circulating virus groups and the public should be especially vigilant in this regard. ..

COLOMBO: The number of people infected with dengue fever has risen to over 17,000 in Sri Lanka so far this year and the virus has caused seven deaths, health officials said on Thursday.

Dengue virus continues in Sri Lanka with nearly 19,000 infected

COLOMBO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of people infected with dengue fever has risen to nearly 19,000 in Sri Lanka so far this year and the virus has caused 10 deaths, health officials here said Tuesday.

Most recently, over 1,000 confirmed dengue cases were reported and more than 100 of them were in Colombo, they said.

Health officials also said there was an increase in the mosquito population and warned of the risk of dengue spreading further in the coming days, especially in urban and semi-urban areas...

COLOMBO: Health experts in Sri Lanka warned on Wednesday of a rapid rise in dengue fever cases in the wake of monsoon rains, which have caused flooding in several districts.

Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry reported that 16,042 people have contracted the mosquito-borne viral disease this year, but ongoing monsoon rains and flooding — which provide perfect breeding sites for mosquitoes — have led to a surge in cases since the beginning of November.

Dr. Shilanthi Seneviratne, a community physician at the National Dengue Control Unit, told Arab News that 2,195 new dengue cases were reported across Sri Lanka in the past two weeks, nearly double the rate during last year’s monsoon period....
