Sri Lanka confirms first case of coronavirus: health official


COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka has confirmed the first case of coronavirus in the country, a senior Sri Lankan health official said on Monday.

“A Chinese lady, who is in her 40s, arrived on the 19th as a tourist and fell ill on the 25th and was confirmed as having the coronavirus following a test on Monday,” Sudath Samaraweera, the chief epidemiologist with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health, told Reuters, adding that this marks the first confirmed case in the island nation.

6 Sri Lankan seamen confirmed ill, suffering fever and high temperature, on board of container ship CMA CGM URALl.The container ship is presently steaming in the Gulf of Aden, en route from China to Suez and then Mediterranean/Black seaports, via Singapore.

Merchant Shipping Association of Sri Lanka was alerted on a mass crew illness in the morning Jan 27. It is not known of course, at present, if seamen are infected with coronavirus, or it’s something else...

Jan 29, Colombo: The Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe says that a Chinese woman who is infected with the coronavirus and receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Colombo, is recovering...

...The first case of coronavirus infection was reported in Sri Lanka on Monday. The 43-year-old Chinese woman has come to Sri Lanka from the Hubei Province in China. Another group had come with her and they had left the island.

It has been revealed that she had visited several areas including Negombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Ahungalla. A female employee of the lodge where the Chinese woman stayed in Ahungalla has been hospitalized on suspicion of contracting the virus.

Meanwhile, 23 patients including a woman arrived from Kuala Lumpur have been admitted to the National Institute of Infectious Disease Hospital in Colombo on suspicion of contracting the virus. Samples of 8 patients have been sent for testing for the virus...

Colombo, March 19 (newsin.asia) – All 59 patients who have to date tested positive for COVID-19 in Sri Lanka are in stable condition and are being treated by a senior medical team of doctors and nurses and are under close observation, the Health Ministry said.
“We are satisfied with the state of recovery of all patients so far. No one is in a critical condition,” the Ministry official said.
On Thursday Sri Lanka detected 7 more virus-infected patients bringing the total confirmed patients to 59, since the first case was detected 11 days ago, with medical teams now working round the clock to treat those confirmed as well as the 212 who were under observation at the 11 designated hospitals...

COLOMBO (News 1st): The total number of Coronavirus patients in the country has increased up to 77.

Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that 72% of the reported patients are males.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva states that presently, over 2700 individuals have been sent over to 17 centers for quarantine. Further, the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health states that 245 patients admitted under the suspicion of Corona are currently being treated at several hospitals.

The majority of the confirmed cases are reported from the Gampaha district. The number of confirmed cases in the Gampaha district now stands at 18, while 17 cases are confirmed in the Colombo district while 12 cases reported from Puttalam district. Kurunegala and Kalutara districts, each, have reported 4 confirmed COVID-19 cases, while 3 are reported from the Ratnapura district.

One more COVID-19 patient has recovered in Sri Lanka, bringing the total number that has recovered and been discharged to three.

There are now 99 active cases in Sri Lanka, with the total confirmed cases being 102.
