Fifty-eight thousand eight hundred and thirty-four dengue cases—and around 80 dengue deaths—have been reported in the country by last Friday. During last year, only 58 dengue deaths had been reported in the country, the Epidemiology Unit said yesterday.According to the unit’s sources, 80 dengue deaths during a period of only 10 months is a cause for concern. Therefore, the public should be vigilant about mosquito breeding grounds and destroy them on a regular basis. At least 30 minutes per week should be allocated to clean such sites, they added.

Epidemiology Unit sources said that the highest number of dengue cases reported in the island so far this year, 27,775, has been from the Western Province. Furthermore, with the prevailing rainy conditions, the Epidemiology Unit has identified five high-risk districts; they are Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, and Galle.The second highest number of dengue cases has been reported from the Gampaha District, and it stands at 9,572. The third highest number of dengue patients, 5,762, has been reported from the Kalutara District. The month with the highest number of dengue patients recorded was August. As dengue returns in force, Jaffna District has moved to second place among the 25 districts affected by the disease, according to data from November 2019. The districts, in order of worst afflicted, are Colombo, Jaffna, Gampaha, Kalutara and Kandy.

Jaffna’s health authorities have been caught unprepared, without the stocks of fogging and spraying chemicals that prevent mosquito breeding and infestation.

In 2018, a total of 2,120 persons were stricken by the virus in Jaffna. This year, 3,350 have already been infected, three of them being fatalities. Residents report fewer visits to their homes by health inspectors doing spot checks. Major hospitals are hard-pressed to deal with the overflow of dengue patients, with 150 people forced to occupy a ward built for 45 patients in the Jaffna Teaching Hospital...
 
Dengue on the rise

A total of 83,811 dengue cases and nearly 95 confirmed dengue deaths have been reported from all parts of the country within this year as at December 6, whereas last year (during the entire year) only 58 dengue deaths were reported, the Epidemiology Unit sources said.

It’s an alarming rate when compared to the previous year, the sources said. Therefore, the public should be vigilant on all types of mosquito breeding sites and destroy them on a regular basis. At least 30 minutes per week should be allocated to clean mosquito breeding sites, they said. The Western Province recorded a total of 37,946 dengue cases which is the highest so far.

Over 87,000 dengue cases recorded in 2019

Colombo (News 1st): The Ministry of Health noted that 87,364 dengue cases have been recorded in the year 2019. Accordingly, there is a hike of 35,705 patients when compared to 2018.

Meanwhile, 90 dengue patients have been reported dead. In 2018, 51,659 cases of dengue were reported and 44.8% of it was recorded from the Western Province.

The highest number of dengue patients this year was reported from Colombo District which is 17,949. 13,718 dengue patients have been reported from the Gampaha district, while, 7,698 dengue patients have been reported from Kandy...
 
Record high dengue cases this year

Some 96,903 dengue cases and 90 clinically confirmed dengue deaths have been reported from all parts of the country this year. Last year, only 58 dengue deaths were reported, Epidemiology Unit sources said. According to the sources, over 90 clinically confirmed dengue deaths is an alarming rate as only 58 dengue deaths were reported during 2018. The public should be vigilant on mosquito breeding sites and destroy them on a regular basis. At least 30 minutes per week should be allocated to clean mosquito breeding sites. The Western Province recorded 42,636 dengue cases which is the highest in the country.


With ongoing rainy condition, the Epidemiology Unit has identified five high risk districts: Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura and Galle districts. The Colombo district recorded 19,567 dengue cases, the Gampaha district, 15,259 and the Kandy district, 8,465. The highest number of dengue patients 21,511 had been reported in November.
Meanwhile, medical experts and Consultants advise pregnant mothers to get admitted to a hospital on the first day of fever. They said the public should seek medical treatment for any type of fever without delay and without applying home remedies. Patients need rest and they should not attend work or school, they said.
