(MENAFN) The Epidemiology Unit declared that two people have been killed as at least 3,700 infected by the dengue virus across Sri Lanka within the first three weeks of January.

Till Friday, 3,743 dengue cases were recorded from across the country with the highest scores reported from capital Colombo, followed by Jaffna in the north and Gampaha on the outskirts of the Colombo district...

A total of 8904 dengue cases and deaths had been reported from all parts of the country within this year by March 01st, the Epidemiology Unit sources said.

According to the sources, the highest number of dengue cases,2017 had been reported from the Colombo district while the second highest number, 1354 had been reported from the Jaffna district. The third highest number of dengue cases, 1093 had been reported from the Gampaha district...

A total of 14,652 dengue cases and fifteen dengue deaths had been reported from all parts of the country within this year by April 26th, the Epidemiology Unit sources said.

According to the sources, the highest number of dengue cases, 3233 had been reported from the Colombo district while the second highest number, 1841 had been reported from the Gampaha district. The third highest number of dengue cases, 1739 had been reported from the Jaffna district.

The Colombo Municipal Council reported a total of 621 dengue cases during the same period. The other parts of the Colombo district recorded a total of 2612 dengue cases. The total number of dengue cases reported from the Western Province is 5954. A total of 5532 dengue patients had been reported from the country in January while 3653 dengue patients reported in February. The number of dengue patients reported in March is 3690. Only 1616 dengue had been reported in the month of April up to 26th, the epidemiologists said...

COLOMBO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Fifteen people have died and over 15,000 infected by the dengue virus across Sri Lanka in the first four months of this year, the Epidemiology Unit said here Friday.

Till April 30, a total of 15,407 dengue cases were reported with the highest number of cases reported from the Colombo district with 3,405 cases, followed by Gampaha in the outskirts of Colombo with 2,007 cases and Jaffna in the north with 1,783 cases...

Colombo (AsiaNews / Agencies) - At least 28 people have died and nearly 20,000 have been infected with dengue virus in Sri Lanka in early 2019. The data was released yesterday by the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health.

The exact number of infections is 19,785. The area most affected is that of the capital Colombo, which alone has 4.274 cases of infection. Following are the areas of Gampaha, on the outskirts of the capital, with 2,536 people infected; then the Jaffna Peninsula, in the north-west, with 1,906 cases. Experts advise patients to alert their doctor immediately in case of high fever and other symptoms, such as vomiting, dizziness and abdominal pain. The Ministry advises all infected patients not to go to work or school.

The dengue virus is once again rampaging through the country with the Western Province being the worst-hit.

?We have had 25,200 dengue cases in the first six months of this year (January to June 2019) with 39 deaths. Twenty of these deaths were in the Western Province. In June alone, around 7,000 people have been affected by dengue in many areas,? Negombo Hospital?s Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. LakKumar Fernando told the Sunday Times, quoting epidemiological data.

Dubbing the trend of dengue in the past three months as ?a steady and rapid rise?, this dengue expert pointed out that in April there were 3,000 cases, in May 4,000 cases and in June 7,000 cases. From April to June, the number of cases had more than doubled.

The red light of danger is shining that dengue is on the rise all over the country, he said, pointing out that currently there is an epidemic in Matara.

Even though there is a circulation of all the dengue virus types, the dominant one now seems to be Serotype 3, while there are a few of Serotype 4 as well, says Dr. Fernando, peering closely at the four dengue virus serotypes ? DENV1, DENV2, DENV3 and DENV4. Last year, however, 92% of the dengue cases were due to Serotype 2.

Forty seven people died and over 200,000 were infected by the dengue virus across Sri Lanka in the first seven months this year, the government information department quoted the Epidemiology Unit as saying on Monday.

Till the end of July, a total of 234,078 dengue cases were reported, with the highest number of cases reported from the Colombo district with 7,260 cases, over 3,000 Gampaha on the outskirts of Colombo and over 2,000 in Kalutara.

Western Province tops Dengue deaths, nears end 2018 toll at 54

Fifty-four persons died of dengue this year by August 9, while 36,497 cases of dengue were reported from across the country during the same period, Epidemiology Unit sources said.In 2018, only 58 dengue deaths were reported. The public should be vigilant for all types of mosquito breeding sites and destroy them on a regular basis.At least 30 minutes per week should be allocated to cleaning mosquito breeding sites. The Western Province recorded 16,349 dengue cases which is the highest by August 9.

Occurrence of the third and fourth types of dengue were reported during this season. In the past, it was first and second types of dengue that were common. With the ongoing rainy condition, the Epidemiology Unit has identified six high-risk districts ? Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara. The Colombo district recorded 7,661 cases of dengue which is the highest.Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe warned the public not to take drugs such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium, and mefenamic acid.

According to Dr. Jasinghe, fever patients should not take any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and steroids such as prednisolone, methyl-prednisolone and dexamethasone. Doctors who treat fever patients should avoid prescribing the above drugs. Above medications cause dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which can be fatal.Meanwhile, medical experts and consultants advise pregnant women to seek admision to a hospital on the first day of fever and the public should seek medical treatment for any type of fever without delay and without resorting to home remedies. All fever patients need rest and they should not attend work or school.

There have been 55 confirmed dengue deaths and 38,000 people affected by this viral disease so far this year, leading to the hospitals being flooded by patients, the Sunday Times learns.

COLOMBO -- Sixty-two people died and over 42,000 were infected by the dengue virus across Sri Lanka in the first eight months of this year, the Epidemiology Unit quoted by the government information department as reporting on Thursday.

Till Aug. 23, a total of 42,051 dengue cases were reported, with the highest number of cases reported from the Colombo district with 8,808 cases, followed by Gampaha in the outskirts of Colombo with over 6,388 cases and Galle in southern Sri Lanka with 4,377 cases.

The Epidemiology Unit said it had identified five high-risk districts including Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, Kalutara in the Western Province and Ratnapura in south central Sri Lanka.

Approximately 46.3 % of dengue cases were reported from the Western province. The highest numbers of dengue cases were reported during the 29th week of 2017.

The outbreak situation in 2017 warranted extensive and regular removal of possible mosquito breeding sites from the environment, along with strengthened patient education on management of fever which resulted in a relatively low mortality.

It is very important to seek medical attention in the event of fever and to do relevant laboratory investigations at least by day three of the illness.

COLOMBO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Health Ministry on Wednesday warned of a possible dengue outbreak with the ongoing monsoon rains, saying 70 dengue related deaths had already been reported so far this year.

The ministry, quoted in local media reports, said that over 45,000 people had been affected by dengue between January and August, and seven districts had been identified as the worst affected.

A total of 55,894 dengue cases and 74 confirmed dengue deaths had been reported from all parts of the country within this year as at October 18th (last Friday) evening. In contrast, only 58 dengue deaths reported for the whole of 2018, experts at the Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit told the Daily News.

The Epidemiology experts described as “alarming” the sharp increase in the impact of Dengue this year over 2018. “74 dengue deaths is an alarming rate when it comes to a period of only 10 months. Last whole year, only 58 dengue deaths were reported...

...The Western Province recorded a total of 26,286 dengue cases which is the highest among the provinces.

With the ong-oing rainy conditions expected persist, the Epidemiology Unit has identified five high risk districts. They are Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura and Galle districts. Colombo district recorded a total of 11,854 dengue cases which is the highest. The second highest number of cases, 8,976, was reported from the Gampaha district. The third highest number of dengue patients, 5,456, has been reported from the Kalutara district. The highest incidence of dengue cases, numbering 9,459, had been reported in August...
