65 deaths this year from dengue outbreak

According to the instructions of the Minister of Health, if the mosquito breeding places are not cleared during this allocated period, lawsuits would be filed against the principals of the relevant schools.

Reports reveal that 34,985 dengue patients and 65 deaths due to dengue have been recorded since the start of the year.

The Ministry of Health states that 12 districts at high risk of Dengue have been identified, and that potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes have also been identified in schools within these districts.

Special beds for dengue patients at NHSL

The National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) has allocated 30 high-dependency beds in several wards, especially for the dengue patients in critical condition. Around 100 dengue patients receive medical treatment at the hospital at any given time, NHSL Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said yesterday.

He said the number of high-dependency beds will be increased up to 60 soon. Once the critical dengue patients are out of danger, they will be transferred to ordinary beds and the special beds will be given to critical dengue patients. The special arrangement made considering the possibility of increasing the number of dengue patients with the ongoing weather pattern, he said. Epidemiology Unit sources said 42,141 dengue patients and nearly 70 dengue deaths were reported from all parts of the country by May 5.

Caution, caution ..., absolute emergency, valuable lives are at stake! Dengue is spreading like a wildfire. It has steadily become an epidemic and is trying to take more and more prized lives. Already this year, during just the first four months, over 40,000, yes, forty thousand, have contracted the disease and over a hundred have succumbed to the malady. Many who died were in the prime of their lives.The figures include little children as well. These numbers are indicative of an unprecedented national calamity of the greatest proportions. It is perhaps also suggestive of the possibility that the worst is yet to come.

School girl is deluded victims of dengue at Chilaw
on 12 May 2017.
Dengue-Death Emaliya Nellie, a resident of Chilaw, 13 m?lpura h?varadi girl died due to the departure of dengue victims last 10 cinemas.

Chilaw Chilaw General Hospital admitted two sisters the same family who have studied the Holy Carmel College Girls, because they leave the bodies of dengue virus. Both the hospital and then was admitted due to its status baralatala Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo.

The younger sister Nellie Emaliya where she unfortunately died and sister still receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.

Of the four strains of the Dengue disease, the second group becoming active since the beginning of this year has begun to pose serious concerns, the Dengue Control Campaign said.

Until the end of 2016, the active strains of the four types of Dengue were one and four only. Now, contracting of the diseases within those two strains has reduced and the second strain has become active.

Although the rate of deaths of patients with Dengue group one was 80 per cent and patients of group four was 20 per cent previously, now 90 per cent of deaths occur in patients who have contracted type 2 Dengue, she added. Dengue is most prevalent in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Galle, Matara, Kegalle and Ratnapura Districts.

293 dengue victims every day, failing health officials overwhelmed

Not unexpectedly, the dengue peak season has arrived this month to coincide with the Southwest monsoon, which lasts until September, and the 92 deaths so far this year is set to surpass 97 people who perished last year.

Every day 293 Sri Lankans were infected with dengue from January to May.

Many who die are below 30 and most are children below 15 years of age.

Dealing with dengue

Over 47,000 suspected cases of dengue have been reported in just the last five months, with the death toll rising to 115 from the 97 lives it claimed last year. This worrying rise in reported cases has hospitals and medical staff struggling to deal with the escalating demand for medical care. Meanwhile, experts claim that the situation could get far worse if it not addressed immediately as the monsoon season is upon us.

Dengue on the rise in South, 12 deaths

From January this year, 4,796 dengue patients were reported from the Southern Province, Provincial Community Health Specialist Harshani Ubesekara said.

Of them, 2,008 were reported from the Galle District including 12 deaths. The Matara district reported 1,625 dengue cases, while 1,163 patients were reported from the Hambantota district. Seven of them died, she said.

As the dengue epidemic has now reached crisis proportions, President Maithripala Sirisena last week called for a report on the efficacy of the Dengue Control Programme and declared an extended war on dengue for another three months beginning 1 June.

During a special meeting with the Presidential Task Force on Dengue Eradication, the President had revealed his plans to issue several new circulars to government departments and ministries regarding the prevention of dengue.

The dengue epidemic has reached an alarming level this year, with more than 45,000 dengue patients reported within the first 5 months of the year. According to the Epidemiology Unit, so far in 2017, some 117 people had died of dengue and 46,669 dengue cases were reported, with a substantial percentage of government institutions found guilty of failing to destroy dengue breeding places.

Declare a state of ?health emergency? and use full force to battle dengue, is the urgent plea by experts as Sri Lanka slides further down the slippery slope, with this virus spread by a tiny mosquito rampaging at will.

As the country braces for the ?higher? dengue peak in June, it has in the ?mild and low? dengue season from January to May seen a huge 47,000 people being struck down, with 125 deaths so far. The dengue menace has taken a drastic turn for the worse coming close not only to last year?s full diseased numbers (61,000) but tragically also the death toll, in just five months this year.

In recent times, before 2017, the highest number of cases of 35,000 and 346 deaths were in 2009. When comparing the situation between 2009 and 2017, with much improved clinical management the death toll has been kept down at 127, even with a caseload of 47,000, the Sunday Times learns. In 2009, there were 1.0% of deaths, while in these five months of 2017, it has been 0.26%.

Is there a change in the disease pattern? Yes. From 2009 to 2016, Sri Lanka has faced DENV1 and DENV4. Currently what is wreaking havoc is DENV2. Experts say that the sequence of people who have earlier been hit by DENV1, now being exposed to DENV2 has caused the virulence to get worse.

2,211 dengue patients admitted so far

Deputy Director of the Colombo North (Ragama)Teaching Hospital (CNTH), Dr. Vajira Dissanayake said there were 138 dengue patients in the ward as of midnight on May 14. A total of 2,211 dengue patients have been admitted to the CNTH within this year, with 22 deaths. She said wards were overcrowded with more than 90 patients to 40 beds. The nursing staff and minor staff are also severely inadequate, according to Dr. Vajira. She stressed on the importance of early diagnosis of the disease, because many deaths from dengue were due to the delay in seeking treatment, with patients only coming to hospital when they were in the critical phase.

Nearly 5,000 dengue cases in South since January

A total of 4,796 dengue cases has been reported in the Southern region from January until the middle of May this year.

According to Southern Regional Consultant Community Physician Harshani Ubesekara, they include 2008 dengue cases from the Galle district, 1,625 cases from the Matara district and 1,163 dengue patients from the Hambantota district.

The death toll from dengue was 20. They are 12 from the Galle district, seven from the Matara district and one from the Hambantota district.

Mother of three falls prey to dengue

A 38-year-old mother of three died of dengue at the Dambulla hospital on May 23 while her 12-year-old child, husband and two sisters are receiving treatment for the same disease at the same hospital.

The deceased was H. M. I. G. Chandrika Sriyani Herath of 8th Canal road, Dambulla. She is the owner of a textile shop at the Dambulla bus stand.

The Health Ministry?s Epidemiology Unit (EU) said yesterday that the total number of dengue cases in the country had topped 54,807 by Tuesday (30). The whole of last year had only 55,150 dengue patients.

Dengue takes the life of a Bhikkuni

Venerable Kottawe Shantha Nanda Bhikkuni has passed away while being treated for dengue at the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital.
At the time of her untimely death, the Bhikkuni had been 37, while she had had her initial education as a laywoman from Visakha Vidayala, Colombo 4.

The Government Medical Officers? Association (GMOA) yesterday said that a life saving drug used to treat dengue patients was in severe shortage.

Upsurge in dengue numbers


Don?t give NSAIDs for fever, urge experts

A massive upsurge in dengue patients has been seen in the past 72 hours in hospitals, aggravating the situation of already very high numbers, experts warned yesterday.
The reason for this upsurge no one knows, but patients are flocking into hospitals, making the already overburdened system to groan and creak, which could lead to serious repercussions, an expert lamented, while many more were wringing their hands in despair.

The need right now is to declare a health emergency with regard to dengue, pull out all stops and face this crisis head-on, the source reiterated, pointing out that as the waters receded in the disaster-hit districts, the threat of dengue would worsen. Dengue patient numbers have reached 55,000 in just five months, with more than 170 deaths.
