Dengue makes dramatic leap

The total number of dengue cases up to April this year has already overtaken the previous year?s count for the same period, as the country is now in the grips of another full blown epidemic that threatens to surpass epidemics of recent years.
According to the Epidemiology Unit?s latest statistics up to April 21, the total cumulative number of confirmed cases of dengue now stands at 3,784 with 31 deaths.
In comparison, the total cumulative number of dengue cases by April end in 2010 was 2,004.
Colombo leads the rest with 1,273 cases and 12 deaths reported so far. The Colombo Municipal Council division has reported 580 cases and 7 deaths while other areas in the district have reported a total of 691 cases and 5 deaths, making the number of deaths in the country?s most populous metropolis region, twelve.
Other districts which have shown a sharp rise in the outbreak and have exceeded the hundred mark are: Gampaha - 441 cases (1 death), Batticaloa ? 253 cases (2 deaths), Puttlam 194 cases (4 deaths), Kurunegala 169 cases (1 death), Ratnapura 164 cases (2 deaths), Jaffna 125 cases (2 deaths), Kandy 102 cases (0 deaths)

Dengue is on increase

The Health Ministry, which warns of a possible outbreak of dengue withthe prevailing rainy weather, advices the public to clean theirenvirons to destroy mosquito breeding places.

According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, over 4,368cases of dengue have been reported from the beginning of this yearupto today and 39 people died of dengue.

Over 1,294 cases of dengue have been reported in April with eightdeaths. The Unit said the majority of dengue cases were reported fromColombo (1,440) and an increase of dengue cases have also shown inGampaha, Kalutara, Puttalam, and Batticaloa districts.

Suspected Dengue outbreak in army

At least 15 soldiers suspected to have contracted Dengue fever had been admitted to the Army Hospital in Narahenpita, Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam revealed.

He said that nearly 100 soldiers suffering from fever are presently warded in the Army Hospital of which 15 were believed to be suffering from dengue, Dr. Kariyawasam said...

Dengue epidemic in Colombo

The Colombo City is facing the worst dengue epidemic ever Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) said yesterday revealing that there had been 195 cases reported this month. CMC which dropped a bomb shell, said in and round the National Hospital Colombo, Military Hospital and vicinity of the Colombo Port had been identified as the major mosquito breeding grounds in the city.

There had been 885 reported dengue cases in the city this year out of which 50 percent is reported to be school children.

Chief Medical Officer CMC Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam told a news conference yesterday that few doctors attached to the National Hospital Colombo had fell victim to Dengue while the nurses quarters is also found to be a breeding ground. In addition, several Chinese nationals who were working at development projects in Colombo were also infected.

He also warned that new complication of dengue DEN 3 had also raised its head in the city...

Dengue in the rise in Colombo

The Ministry of Health warns that with the monsoon rains the danger of spreading dengue has increased. The Health Authorities request the people to get admitted to hospitals if they have fever and body pains for more than two days.

During this year alone 6,077 dengue patients have been identified. Out of them 1,975 are form the Colombo district. Out of the 1235 patients identified in the month of May, 406 of them are from the Colombo district.

It has been found that many surroundings in the Colombo city limit are dengue mosquito breeding areas and there has been a drop in interest among the people in clearing these areas. The Ministry says that the parents should be very vigilant about school surroundings and the Local Government Institutions should undertake an effective method in clearing garbage.

The Ministry has planned to implement a mosquito control programme in August this year. This programme will be implemented on Monday?s of the first two weeks in August as well as in the last two Saturdays of the month. It will include inspection of houses as well. The Health Ministry said that legal action will be taken against those who are found responsible for keeping mosquito breeding areas. (niz).

Dengue cases, deaths mount

Dengue cases have risen steeply to new levels with 7,358 cases - the highest number from the Colombo district (2,505) by yesterday (11).
Colombo also had the highest number of deaths (24) with 10 reported from the Municipal Council area so far. The majority are school going children.
The Health Ministry has warned that the current epidemic could worsen with the prevailing rains and the proliferation of dengue breeding sites.

Over 200 patients suffering from dengue have been reported to be admitted daily to the National Hospital and major hospitals in the suburbs, while the Lady Ridgeway Hospital too has recorded a significant increase in the number of young children being admitted on a daily basis.

More than 18 districts island-wide now have exceeded the 100 mark in dengue patients while only eight have recorded less than a 100 patients. The highest number of cases are from Colombo (2,505), Batticaloa (533), Ratnapura (332), Kurunegala (307), Puttlam (242), Galle (226), Hambantota (221), and Kandy (221) all of which have exceeded the 200 mark. Other badly affected areas include Kegalle (182), Polonnaruwa (139), Anuradhapura (109). The least number of cases is from Mullaitivu (7)...

National Dengue Death Audit to be carried out Thursday, 16 June 2011 02:23

Health Ministry yesterday announced that measures have been taken to carry out a ?National Dengue Death Audit? to identify primary causes that lead to the death of Dengue patients and to identify options that will prevent the loss of lives resulting from the disease.

Health Ministry spokesman W.M.D. Wanninayake speaking to Daily Mirror yesterday said that collection of data for the audit has already begun and is being carried out in all hospitals countrywide. ?This year some 66 deaths and 7500 cases related to dengue have been reported in the country. Although this number is lower than that of the previous year, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena decided that the situation could be improved further if the deaths of the patients were probed as it would help identify points that had ultimately led to the death of the patient,? he added.

Mr. Wanninayake stated that 40 cases among the total of 66 deaths reported this year will be probed under the audit where details of each patient will be studied. ?Every step taken since the appearance of the initial symptoms of Dengue, the point of admittance to a hospital, treatment methods and causes of death would be studied to identify the weak points,? he said.
