Spanish nurse's assistant may have caught Ebola taking off suit, doctor says

Madrid (CNN) -- A doctor treating the Spanish nurse's assistant who's the first person to contract Ebola outside Africa in the current outbreak said Wednesday that she may have been exposed while removing her protective suit.

Dr. German Ramirez said the woman, who is in isolation at Madrid's Carlos III Hospital, had told him it was possible that she might have had contact with the suit -- possibly the gloves -- on her face.

"That's what we were working on -- on the errors possibly made while removing the protective suit," he told reporters outside the hospital.

There is a clear pattern emerging here that the patients themselves are being blamed for spreading the disease outside of Africa. The Texas patient was accused of "lying on the form" about the contact with the pregnant Ebola case, even though all pregnant women are turned away from hospitals these days in Liberia and he was likely told that there was no way she could have Ebola. Now we have this case where some doctor is saying that she "could" have made errors in removing her PPE. This shouldn't be possible, someone should have been watching her de-gown and there really should be video of the process so that we can know for sure. In both cases the patients were turned away from the hospital because the spin on this is complacency. Complacency is the enemy and public officials seem to be propagating it in order to prevent panic but there are real risks and these types of cases are going to keep occurring as long as we have raging outbreaks in West Africa. This is not the patient's fault but human nature.

At least we're hearing more about second tests after a negative. I don't recall explicit mention of that in news stories, prior to this case. Not even so much on the Dallas patient contacts.

Sucks that the CYA seems to be throwing the patients under the bus.

I was under the impression that early tests frequently give false negatives, and that until two negative tests have occurred a couple of days apart, a suspect case cannot be discounted?? If this suspect case only came forward yesterday, surely it is too early to say what the outcome is with any certainty?

Finally, one week after first seeing a doctor, Romero found out why she felt so sick: She had Ebola.

Even after her Ebola test came back positive at Madrid's Alcorcon hospital, Romero had to wait.

According to a worker at that hospital, Romero lay in the emergency room -- exposed to other patients as well as medical staff, going back and forth -- for eight hours before being transferred to a hospital in the Spanish capital that specializes in infectious diseases.

Hospital: Condition Of Spanish Nurse With Ebola Is Deteriorating

Hospital officials in Spain are saying that the condition of a nurse quarantined with Ebola has worsened.

Yolanda Fuentes, an official at the Carlos III hospital in Madrid says of Ebola patient Teresa Romero Ramos, 44: "Her clinical situation has deteriorated but I can't give any more information due to the express wishes of the patient."

Romero was admitted to the hospital earlier this week after she was apparently infected by a contaminated glove she was using in the treatment of another Ebola patient who later died.

Ebola: Spanish nurse Teresa Romero 'worsens'

The health of a Spanish nurse who became the first person to contract Ebola outside of West Africa has worsened, a hospital official said on Thursday.

Teresa Romero's brother said her health had deteriorated and she was now being helped with her breathing in hospital.

Meanwhile, two doctors who treated her have been admitted for observation.

The admissions bring to six the total number of people under quarantine at the hospital in Madrid.

A spokesman for the Carlos III hospital said that so far neither of the two doctors recently admitted had shown Ebola symptoms.

The nursing assistant Teresa Romero, infected by the Ebola virus, has experienced a severe deterioration in his health over Thursday and is in a "very critical" situation, as reported by the Minister of Health of Community of Madrid, Javier Rodriguez.

The president of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio Gonzalez, has also confirmed the delicate state of health Romero, whose life has said, "is in grave danger."

Previously, the regional secretary of the Union of Practical Nursing, Elvira Gonz?lez, had said at the gates of the center that the patient was "serious, intubated and begins to have multiple organ failure," a claim that was denied by hospital source Carlos III of Madrid.

Deteriorating but no longer intubated don't usually go together.

That is true. Sometimes people are deliberately intubated just to make management easier, especially if they are combative for whatever reason, or are vomiting & are not very alert. In this situation, it might also lessen the risk to caregivers. Perhaps that was just a misunderstanding somewhere along the line?

I was concerned about the shock of grief for her too. It certainly didn't help and could have been postponed until she was on the mend, if she was fortunate enough to survive. I haven't seen if she got any antivirals?
