Parana has in recent months an unusual situation for the flu, and had, according to Health Secretary Gilberto Martin, to learn to deal with the disease in real time.

"We give support to the people of Paran?. It was obviously an important test for the Unified Health System (SUS). Executed an emergency invested more than $ 22 million in prevention, diagnosis and service," he said.

According to Martin, there was a rapid response by health services, both the public and private sectors. He said that the people realized that the situation was atypical and worked amazingly.

On 20 June, the secretary said at a news conference, the first two confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) - swine flu in Parana. The latest epidemiological bulletin confirmed by laboratory tests and clinical criteria, more than 48 thousand cases of the disease across the state. From July 14 until now, 287 people had complications and died. The last death occurred on December 11.

The report showed the distribution of deaths by sex - 55% women and 45% of men. The age, 61.7% of deaths occurred in people who were between 20 and 49 years, 19.9% between 50 and 59 years and 9.4% between 5 and 19 years.

The secretary warned that these figures show that the virus is still circulating in the state. "The population must remain the care and habits acquired during the winter, when they were reported more cases of the disease. The difference is that now the survival of the virus in the environment is shorter cycles from 20 to 30 minutes, unlike the winter, when it survives up to eight hours. " According to Gilberto Martin, with that, the transmission is smaller, but the circulation of the virus is still intense.

Along with other Southern states, Parana articulates with the federal government a priority in the receipt of doses of vaccine against the new flu. The Ministry of Health bought 83 million doses, which start arriving this month.

The Secretary argues that most of the doses can be earmarked for states that reported more cases of the disease. Martin points out that currently, in the Northern Hemisphere, which has been observed by Southern countries to follow the development of new flu vaccine is already being successfully implemented.

Shares of Paran? in fighting the pandemic has served as an example for other states and countries, the authorities have sought health care to discuss the matter. "We were the first state to handle the oral solution to treat the first child to take exams decentralized to the Central Laboratory of the State (Lacen). With the decentralization of tests, we have the real scenario of the epidemic and, therefore, we planning the actions with more assertiveness, "he said.

The Lacen Paran? is doing genetic sequencing of influenza virus H1N1. It was the third laboratory in Brazil to receive authorization from the Ministry of Health First results showed that the virus circulating in S?o Paulo is very similar to the others identified in other regions where the epidemic occurred. Did not present any significant change that distinguishes the virus circulating in the state than it is in other countries.
